Description

The Murmansk Sea Commercial Port is located in the eastern part of the Kola Bay, which is part of the Barents Sea. It was built before the formation of the city of Murmansk and is the most powerful enterprise in the region.

History of creation

By the end of the XIX century in the Northwest of the Russian Empire there were only two ports - the Archangel and St. Petersburg. And both experienced during the winter season difficulties with wiring vessels through the freezing water area. In St. Petersburg, an icebreaker fleet operated, the maintenance of which was not costly. And the port in Arkhangelsk stopped its work with the onset of frost.

Government officials, who were grateful for the state, repeatedly offered to create a new fleet base in the ice-free area of the Barents Sea. For example, in 1894 the Minister of Finance S. Witte addressed the tsar with this idea. With the new strength, the need arose to organize a port in the First World War, when the German Navy blocked passages through the Baltic for ships of Russia and its allies.

Work on the construction of the first berth in the Kola Bay began in the summer of 1915. A month and a half later (on September 1) the Swedish steamship Drott moored to the pier with goods from New York.

In the name of the revolution

Soviet power cautiously treated the royal legacy. Realizing the strategic importance of the region, first the foreign troops that occupied Murmansk and Arkhangelsk were driven out, then the work on expanding the port infrastructure began.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the boom of Arctic research began. Norwegian, British, Swedish, Danish, Italian scientists and pioneers equipped numerous expeditions to the polar region. In the 1930s, Soviet researchers picked up the baton. It was the Murmansk Sea Commercial Port that became the main base for exploration and development of the Arctic wealth.

The Second World War became a hard test. The Hitlerites did their best to paralyze the work of the only transport hub linking the European part of the USSR to the allied states. Murmansk port has become the outer gate of the country. Heroically and selflessly working porters, unloading under bombardment arriving from Britain and the United States of the sea caravans. Tanks, airplanes, gunpowder, ammunition, vehicles, ammunition passed through dilapidated piers and went straight to the front of the war. Thanks to the persistence of sailors, soldiers, workers, ordinary citizens, Murmansk stood up to become a hero city. It took years to completely restore the port facilities.

The post-war period

The rapid development of industry of the Kola Peninsula contributed to the expansion of infrastructure. In addition to cargoes from the "big land", the Murmansk Commercial Sea Port shipped timber, apatites, iron ore concentrates, and products from the Kandalaksha aluminum smelter. For labor merit in 1966, the government awarded the port workers with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. In the 80 years, MMTP cargo turnover became one of the leaders of the country.

He leads the cargo turnover among the ports of all countries located in the Northern Sea Basin. A high degree of mechanization and modern powerful equipment allow MMTP to export more cargoes than all the ports of the region combined.

The main volume of all cargo processed in the port is coal (76%). MMTP is one of the few ports capable of handling this mineral. Murmansk holds a record of loading - 153,000 tons for a dry cargo vessel with a deadweight of 176,000 tons. The capacities allow annually to load 14 million tons of coal.

The development of the Arctic

Murmansk Commercial Sea Port is the key to developing the resources of the Arctic.
