Probably, there is no inhabitant in the Russian capital who has never seen the monument to Tchaikovsky. The first variant of the future sculpture

By that time, Mukhina, being a well-deserved master on the territory of the whole USSR and one of a small circle of women sculptors, already had her own ideas about the creation of the monument. Initially, she saw the image of a composer, who was standing in front of invisible orchestraists. But it was not possible to perform a monument to Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory in this manner. This idea required for its implementation a huge space, and a modest courtyard along Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street completely did not match the plan. In addition, the talent of Peter Ilyich was not limited to conductor activity alone.

Changes made

Cardinally changing the direction, Vera Ignatyevna proposed new sketches of the future sculpture, according to which the monument to Tchaikovsky should stand out from the total number of sights by the originality of the composition. This option assumed the image of a sitting classic, conveniently located in the chair in front of the console with an open note notebook. The artist intended to convey the image of the creator, gifted with inspiration in the process of creating his works. Seeing him, gives the impression that with his left hand, Pyotr Ilyich counts the rhythm, and the right holds a pencil at the ready, so that at any moment a creative impulse can be fixed on paper.

However, this vision of the future monument caused many disagreements. The comments made by Mukhina dealt primarily with the static posture of Tchaikovsky. It seemed that he was frozen in some unnatural tension. It was also decided to change the pedestal. It was enlarged and made of materials of a red shade instead of the prevailing gray colors. An ideal stone for this purpose was counted red granite.
