Modem D-Link DSL-2640U - setting up WiFi

On the D-Link DSL 2640U modems, the WiFi setup does not represent anything particularly complicated, even if the user does not have a special disk that must be bundled. But if you set the correct parameters, you need to remember some nuances, which will be discussed further.

D-Link DSL: WiFi setup: where to start?

The very first thing in the future setup is to make a connection and initialize the device in a computer system.

Please note: if the device was purchased in the company "Rostelecom", the services of which are intended to be used in the future, a special optical medium (CD-disk) must be attached to the device, which contains the device drivers and the "Hardware Setup Wizard". If the device was purchased separately, it would still be necessary to have a disk with accompanying software, but without the "Master." This, of course, is not the worst option, since it turns out that it is not difficult to make a connection manually. To do this, follow the instructions given below (you can use this manual for any compatible devices).

Connecting to a computer

For the D-Link DSL 2640U modem / router, the WiFi setting must begin with the connection. The very first condition is the availability of a telephone line (the benefit is not a problem). The second condition is the installation of a splitter, or a so-called splitter. In this case, it is about the fact that when you go online, the phone line is not blocked.

On the splitter itself there are two sockets for connecting the appropriate RJ-45 cables. In principle, to confuse something is difficult, because they are marked with connection inscriptions, although they look quite the same.

Installing drivers

When the electrical circuit of the serial connection "computer device> modem> splitter> telephone network" will be fully assembled and operational, the configuration of the DSL 2640U WiFi router will be reduced to determining the device in the operating system and setting the correct parameters.

Drivers, in theory, can be installed directly from the drive that comes with the device when you buy. If it is not (was damaged or lost), you can download the software either on the provider's website or on the resource of the manufacturer of the equipment.

Login to the interface

Now you need to log in to the router management system. To do this, you can use any Internet browser, in the address bar of which you need to prescribe a combination of 192.168.1.1 (the standard procedure for all devices of this type). In the login and password lines, admin is specified.

Next you need to go to the Internet settings on the tab with the same name.

Configuring an Internet connection

If a user who uses the services of the provider "Rostelecom" has a special disk that was purchased together with the modem, the question of setting is solved quite simply.

It is enough to insert the media into the drive, after which the "Hardware Setup Wizard", developed by Rostelecom, will start. As already understood, all parameters and options for the connected device will be automatically exposed.

But, for example, there is no disk, it was not possible to download the drivers from the developer's site either. What to do in this case? Manual tuning will help in this situation. Do not worry, nothing complicated in the process of setting the necessary parameters is not expected.

At the first stage for the DSL 2640U modem, the "Rostelecom" setting (WiFi) means setting the communication type. This parameter should be set to PPPoE. Unlike the Bridge mode, this will allow you to connect to the wireless network even when the main terminal to which the router is connected is turned off.

After that, we specify the values of the PCI and VCI parameters, following the definition of the regions of the user's location, register the login and password specified in the contract, tick the Keep Alive check box and go to the LCP parameters.

For intervals, set the value to 35, for dips to 2. As an additional setting, the rector is recommended to use the IGMP string.

D-Link DSL 2640U: setting up "PC"

Internet configured. It's time to take care of using the modem's capabilities in full. As already understood, it is both a modem and a router. Thus, with its help you can create a wireless connection via WiFi, which you can use if you have any other computer or mobile device.

In the D-Link DSL 2640U router, the WiFi setup automatically retrieves the password when entering the hardware settings. This applies only to the web-interface of the device, and not to protection of access to the virtual network. You can also use one more router menu.

Here the setting of the WiFi DSL 2640U password or login suggests using automatically, but they need to be changed (if this is really necessary).

Passwords and encryption

Now the most basic! When you enter the Wireless tab, select the WPAPSK type, set the Encryption encryption algorithm to AES, enter the arbitrary name of the created connection in the SSID field, specify and confirm the Pre-shared Key , If verbatim, preventing penetration into the network or to a given computer terminal from outside.

Pay attention to that moment, that sometimes the system of input of the password can appear inefficient. The key will have to come up with a unique one. The matter is that combinations like "once-two-three-four" or QWERTY here do not pass. The security system perceives them as unreliable and potentially hacked in the first place. However, on a DSL 2640U modem / router, the WiFi setting can not be set up by the password itself, of course, but using user intervention. To do this, just go to the above address in the main parameters of the device and simply change the combination in the appropriate line. After that, you will need to reboot both the computer and the router.

When restarting, you can check the status of both the network and the device that provides the connection using Device Manager (devmgmt.msc in the Run console), or simply by going to the Network and Sharing Center where the connection should be activated.

Brief conclusions

As a certain result concerning the adjustment of devices above the mentioned type of recommendations, it is especially possible not to give. Practical all settings for setting basic parameters and options are standard.

The only thing I would like to draw attention to is the choice of the type of connection. Bridge access is better not to use at all. For example, you have a router (modem) connected to a home computer (a fixed system unit). As soon as you turn it off, WiFi communication is lost (this is when using the Bridge scheme). In the case of installing PPPoE, even if the main terminal is disconnected, the communication through the router will be carried out anyway.

Naturally, special attention should be paid to creating and saving passwords, for example, making a backup copy of the system itself by at least an elementary preservation of the recovery point. If you do not want to use Windows tools, you can use the automatic update programs like Advanced System Care, Glary Utilities or even iObit Uninstaller, which just assume before starting your own operations to use the recovery point tool if, as they say, something and where Something will go wrong. But in general (this is noted in all reviews on the forums), problems can consist solely in communication settings, and certainly not in the actual connection to the Internet.
