Vitamins are found that increase life expectancy

Although it is a little premature to announce the successful search for the elixir of immortality, significant success in seeking to abolish death and aging has been achieved. According to a new study published in the journal Science, a vitamin called nicotinamide ribozide (NR) has the ability to stimulate the regeneration of lost muscle tissue in older mice, while increasing their life span.

Talking about this clear breakthrough, lead researcher Johan Averx explained that regenerative medicine can receive significant benefits from this work. He says that one day with the help of dietary supplements we can do without surgery.

Ability to regenerate

Like all other animals, with the course of life, a person gradually loses cells as a result of the aging process. This process is also known as cell death. But instead of just dying, our body replenishes their stock, stimulating the development of stem cells.

However, the consequence of our earthly nature is that over time this ability to regenerate slows down, which ultimately leads to the death of the body. Scientists are interested in prolonging human life. Therefore, they are always looking for ways to quickly start the regeneration process as soon as it starts to slow down. An international team of researchers can now solve at least one part of the puzzle.

What is the secret of mitochondria?

According to the team of scientists, the key is hidden in our mitochondria, which are often called the "power stations" of our cells. These small organelles generate the energy needed for a wide range of cellular processes. The development of stem cells in specialized, for example, depends on the energy produced in the mitochondria.

It was found that mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the signs of aging. Therefore, the authors of the study decided to seek a direct relationship between this dysfunction and the ability of cells to regenerate, hoping to find a way to restore it.

When stem cells develop, they use stocks of a compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD +). It plays a vital role in ensuring the normal functioning of mitochondria. Therefore, the researchers decided to introduce the old NR mice, which is the precursor of NAD +, in order to see what effect this will have on their ability to regenerate muscle cells.

Results of the study

The results showed that after taking NR, mice were able to generate a large number of muscle stem cells, which subsequently developed into adult muscle cells, enhancing their endurance and function. For example, they were soon able to work for a longer time and became more stable.

The mice injected with NR also lived longer than those who were not given a vitamin very similar to B3 . It is noteworthy that the authors of the study did not reveal any negative side effects even with the introduction of high doses of NR.

Naturally, more work is needed before claiming that scientists managed to develop a panacea. It is not yet known how effective or safe this vitamin can be used to treat aging in the human body.
