When you upgrade to Windows 10, the computer hangs. What to do?

Since the tenth version of the Windows operating system is the most popular today, many users want to install it. Unfortunately, there is often a problem with the fact that when you upgrade Windows 10, it hangs at 99 percent of the process. What is the reason and how to deal with this, see below.

Windows 10 Upgrade: The Most Common Symptoms

In general, the hang of the upgrade process to "tens" is exactly 99 percent - not the only problem. In fact, there are many more situations with similar symptoms, when the process hangs dead.

Among all that is encountered, the following points stand out:

  • Receiving updates;
  • Installation of updates (25%);
  • Copying files (84%);
  • Installation of the system (25, 32, 44 and 99%).

In all cases, when the update to Windows 10 has hung by 99%, the LED signaling the access to the hard disk stops blinking and burns constantly. You can reset the computer to its original state by forced reloading by long pressing the power button and then turning it on. But in this case the update will be completely canceled.

Of course, provided that the user on board has the minimum configuration necessary for installing Windows 10, and the connection is too slow, the above processes may appear to hang only in appearance. In fact, they simply can take too much time (even about 20 hours). Nevertheless, we will dwell on the case when the update of Windows 10 has grown by 99 percent. What can be done in this situation?

Upgrading Windows 10 hovered at 99 percent: what's the problem

The reasons for the occurrence of such failures can be found very much. It should be borne in mind that the conflict can occur at the software and hardware level, even if it meets the minimum requirements.

Sometimes the problem may be the presence of several hard disks. According to the representatives of Microsoft, Windows 10 hangs when a removable SD memory card is inserted into the card reader. The same symptoms are also characteristic for cases when copying files is made to a removable USB-medium. True, the process can eventually be completed, but Windows itself will become unlicensed, and it's completely unclear why.

Finally, a failure can be observed in the service itself of the "Update Center", if an upgrade is made with it.

Problems with disks and removable devices and how to fix the situation

But let's return to the situation when the update of Windows 10 has grown by 99%. In the case of additional hard disks and SD memory cards, the problem can be solved quite simply.

The card should be removed from the card reader, and hard disks should be turned off, if possible, by pulling the appropriate SATA cables from the hard drive connectors. In addition, it is desirable to completely disconnect all other peripherals, leaving only the monitor, keyboard and mouse (for laptops - just a mouse). Perhaps, if the Windows 10 update is too old, it will be possible to solve the problem in this way.

Failures while receiving updates

Another solution to the problem, when Windows 10 hangs at any stage of the upgrade, is to deactivate the update service itself, because it provokes this type of failure in the source system.

To do this, what is called, "kill" the process. The service can not be terminated in the "Task Manager", so you will have to use a special section called from the "Run" menu (Win + R) with the services.msc command.

In the right window of the appeared editor, you need to find the service of Windows Update, and then right-click to call the context menu where the "Stop" line is selected. Do not forget that the antivirus software installed in the old system can also negatively affect the upgrade, so you should deactivate it during the upgrade process by selecting the suspend command in the corresponding menu (either for the maximum possible time or until the next reboot) .

Windows Update Diagnostics

Now let's look at one more common situation. If the Windows 10 update has dropped by 99%, you can try to troubleshoot the problem using the diagnostic system utility to check the operation of the update center itself.

To do this, we first call the "Run" console, where we write the msdt / id string of WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.

In the window that appears, use the "Advanced" line, which is located at the bottom, in the new window, tick the line for the automatic application of the fixes, click on the start link on behalf of the administrator and click the "Next" button. After that, it remains to follow the instructions of the system, and after the diagnostic process it will be possible to start the re-installation of the "dozens".

What in the end?

As you can see, there can be a lot of situations when Windows 10 hangs at some stage of the upgrade, and each of them has its own solution. However, sometimes problems can be observed in an already installed system. For example, very often Windows 10 hangs when searching for updates. It's hard to say what it's connected with. Perhaps, the problem is in a bad connection, perhaps the update is affected by some already installed package. In general, such cases were not deliberately considered, because the described type of fighting refers specifically to attempts to update the existing OS to the tenth version. But here, too, you first need to find out the cause of the computer hanging up and only then make a decision to fix the problem (although it is believed that all the above-described tools are good regardless of the root cause). At the worst, if it does not help at all, it's better to download the "clean" installation distro, completely remove the old system and only after that install Windows 10 (and even format all hard disks and logical partitions).
