The word "Universiade" comes from the words "university" and "olympiad". Such competitions are held at various levels - local, regional, regional, national and international. Their main goal is to enable students to relax and have fun, instilling in them high moral values.

Common types of games at the Universiade

Due to the fact that the Universiade covers a wide range of both sports and intellectual competitions, every student can participate in them.

For example, popular kinds of competitions are:

  • boxing;

  • football;

  • basketball;

  • fencing;

  • chess;

  • checkers;

  • Swimming;

  • Table tennis and big tennis;

  • handball;

  • literature;

  • Econometrics;

  • mathematics;

  • Informatics and others.

In addition to the types listed above, there are others. Universities can negotiate among themselves and play games in other sections.

International Universiade

At the international level, especially in the US and Europe, Universiades are very popular, and a lot of students participate in them.

The first such international competitions among students were held in 1905 in the United States. Since then, they have gained immense popularity, and to date are aware of what a Universiade is, almost all students in the world. Even there is an International Federation of University Sports.

As a rule, Universiades are held in summer and winter once in two years.

For example, in 2013 such an event was held in the city of Kazan, Russian Federation. As a result, these were 17 international games. The most recent competitions were held in the Republic of Korea in the glorious city of Gwangju in the summer, they became the third games on the territory of the republic.

The next summer Universiade of the international level will be held in 2017. The hosts will be residents of China, namely the city of Taipei.

Requirements for the participants of the Universiade

If you want to participate in games of this level and you know what a Universiade is, then you must adhere to all the following conditions:

  1. Have the citizenship of the country from whose university you will speak.
  2. At the time of the games, be a student at your school.
  3. Be aged between 17 and 28 years inclusive.

As you can see, there are not very many requirements, but all of them must be fulfilled.

One of the incentives for participation in such an event is, of course, rewards. Someone places five students in physical education, but there are also universities that reward participants with more expensive gifts if the Universiade is won: medals, cash awards, vacation packages, etc.
