Varieties of leeks: description, features of cultivation and storage

Improving appetite and speeding up the metabolic process, normalizing the liver and gallbladder, improving the functioning of the nervous system, restoring memory, coordinating movements and mindfulness are all part of the beneficial properties of leeks with a sweet and delicate taste that is unfairly offended by the attention of consumers in our country.

Features of the plant

The main nutritional value of leeks is represented by a white foot. The early young leaves of the plant, which are similar to the garlic we used, can also be eaten, as they are also enriched with minerals and vitamins. The size of the leg largely depends on the growing conditions, as well as on the leeks and can vary in height from 15 to 45 cm, width - from 3 to 8 cm. Leeks can be kept for up to six months without losing their vitamin properties. Be sure to cut the roots and leaves. The seeds of this onion are smaller than in the onion species, and they retain their germination for 3 years. And bulbs, as in the case of a colleague, he does not form.

Varieties of leeks are cold-resistant. They are not afraid of freezing up to -8 ° C. Therefore, in the open ground, it can be from early spring to late autumn.

Leek: varieties, photo

From the beginning of planting and until emergence of the plant, this plant takes 2-2.5 weeks. The grades of leeks in terms of the rate of maturation are divided into:

- Early;

- the average;

- Late.

Early plant varieties

Usually the most productive are the late varieties of vegetables. However, leeks have the most abundant harvests in the early varieties. Early-ripening varieties can be tried already in late summer or early autumn. For maturation, they require an average of 140 days. The leg is rather thin, has no more than 3 cm in diameter. The cold is not very good. In the south, you can safely and easily grow such a leek. Early ripening varieties are represented by:

- The West, which ripens in about 130 days. Sufficiently resistant to diseases and parasites. The taste is semi-sharp. The length of the bleached stem is about half a meter. From 1 m² you can collect from 3 to 6 kg of leeks. In addition to fresh consumption, it can be preserved, marinated and frozen.

- Goliath, whose diameter of the bleached part is almost twice as large as Vesta and is 5-6 cm. Suitable for drying and consumption in fresh form.

- Kilima with a vegetation period of 150 days. Harvest will be possible from the middle of summer. It is a disease-resistant leek.

Early varieties are loved by exhibitors for the opportunity of planting them under glass at the beginning of the year and demonstrations in September.

Average varieties of plants

The medium-ripening varieties have an average vegetation period of 160 days. Yields are smaller than in early ripening species, but the quality is much better. Harvest of autumn varieties should be harvested in September. Medium-ripening varieties have the largest number of varieties. It is often left to winter on the bed is this leek. The best varieties are:

- A bastion with a vegetation period of 155 days. Very productive, yield high. The weight of the bleached stalk is about 200 grams, the length is 30 cm.

- Jolanth - relatively resistant to fungal diseases of plants. The bleached part is of medium size. The yield from 1 m² will be about 5 kg.

- Casimir is a high plant with a good quality of bleached stem, 25 cm long and 3-3.5 cm in diameter. From the sowing period to the harvesting time, it should take approximately 180 days. Productivity is not too high, will be 3 kg with 1 m².

- Tango. Has a vegetation period of 150-160 days. Productivity is high. Well tolerates the cold.

- Camus - a low, compact species with a height of 20 cm and a diameter of just over 2 cm. Its taste is slightly sharp. Productivity is small.

- Lancelot with a beautiful, thick, medium bleached stalk. It tolerates frosts well. Consume recommended fresh, store for up to two months. Particularly fond of hilling.

- Elephant MS with a sharp taste and leg length from 10 to 25 cm. Does not require much moisture.

Late plant varieties

Winter varieties have good resistance to cold and frost. The vegetation period is long, from 180 to 200 days, and often the plants do not have time to finish their growth, so they have a short bleached part. Grow winter varieties well in the greenhouse. Some truck farmers transplant the plant into boxes to grow to frost. The most common winter varieties are:

- A gangster with a short white stalk. Direct seeding in the soil can be carried out at the end of July.

- Mercury. It takes 175 days to vegetate. The height of the white stem is 20 cm. It has a delicate, slightly pungent taste. Resistant to viral disease.

- Quarantine. Good yield, especially in the second half of September. It has good taste qualities and a cylindrical stem shape 5 cm wide.

Storage of leeks

Removed the leek for the winter a few days before the start of frost. You can store onions in the basement or refrigerator. In the basement is better to choose a vertical position for the onion. The roots are sprinkled with a slightly damp earth or sand, the most common, but also slightly moist. You can trim the roots, but not completely. Without roots, the onion quickly deteriorates and begins to rot. Trim the leaves one third, leaving most of the greens to feed the bleached portion. If you do not cut them, they will still wither and still cause inconvenience in the storage process. The storage temperature is 0 ° C.

Varieties of leeks differ in good adaptability to different growing conditions, the duration of the growing season, the yield, the size and weight of the bleached stem. His cultivation is, of course, painstaking, but our health is worth it.
