Signal rockets - purpose, device and use

To provide various signals that allow visual communication, including for determining their location in the event of emergency situations, the required evacuation, orientation and target designation, as well as in other cases, signal flares are used.

Types and characteristics

Among the products produced at different enterprises and in different countries, they differ in their capabilities, technical performance and tasks for which they are intended. Earlier, approximately to the 80th years of the last century, the most widespread were signal rockets, made in the form of a special cartridge for the appropriate pistols, and also making it possible to shoot from smooth-bore hunting trunks. Later, they began to displace devices made in the form of a cylindrical tube, which do not require any weapons, and the launch in the vast majority of samples is provided directly from the hand. The design of the signal rocket is simple enough, however, due to the need for accurate calculations and knowledge of the pyrotechnic characteristics of the substances used, it is not possible to manufacture them in a domestic environment with the required degree of reliability and safety.

Basic rocket details

Let's consider what basic elements it consists of. First, it is directly a tube, in which all the components are placed. Typically, it uses cardboard or plastic, which has the required qualities of mechanical strength, and to avoid dulling covered with waterproof lacquer.

In the lower part there is a pocket, screwed with a hermetically sealed cover, in which there is a lanyard attached to the inside of the igniter. Directly around the igniter is placed a knock-out charge consisting of smoky or smokeless powder, and then through the gasket follows the pyrotechnic composition, providing after the ignition of the well-visible from a long distance "star". At the top of the tube is installed a light, sealed cardboard layer, also designed to prevent damage to its contents under the influence of the external environment. In some cases, to ensure a longer duration of visibility of the burning pyrotechnic composition, it consists in a light inner package to which a small parachute is attached.

Making a rocket at home

The smoke signal rocket is manufactured in the same order. However, all are well aware of the various ingredients that make it possible to fabricate a terrestrial signal cartridge at home, which, when ignited, gives a clearly visible and sufficiently dense smoke puff.

Practical use

Launch signal flares, usually with the left hand. Fingers firmly hold its body roughly in the middle, and the right hand straightens the lanyard. After giving the device the required elevation angle, which should be at least 35-40 degrees, the cord is pulled out with a sharp movement, and the position of the cartridge should not change much in its direction. With particular care, it is necessary to observe the rule of movement of the right hand. It must coincide with the center line of the device. If it is not observed, there can be a deviation of the launch of the missile with the onset of possible negative consequences: from a rebound to a fire located near trees, buildings, etc.

Storage conditions

Signal rockets should be protected from moisture, as this can lead to failure of operation. In cases of contact with water, it is necessary to wipe them with a dry cloth, without violating the tightness of the cartridge. Do not expose them to open sources of fire, nor should they be left exposed to direct sunlight, as this can lead to spontaneous combustion.
