Font of the typewriter: use, names, historical information

Vintage fonts, imitating a typewriter, are now widely used in web design. They give the text of elegance and special charm, but they are, of course, not applicable in all cases.

Historical reference

Before the advent of computer typing systems, typewriters were used. They were created mainly for rewriting securities and manuscripts. Font typewriter is not just so uneven and a bit vague. When one of the first inventors of this device, M. Alisov, presented his offspring, many did not like it, because the symbols were standard even, as from the printing house. This created some difficulties in the recruitment of documents, they had to be censored. The rest of the inventors took this error into account, and the font of the typewriter became the same as we know it now.

In typewriters, the so-called monospaced font is used, which differs in the same width of characters. It is believed that it is less convenient for reading than the proportional font that is used in modern printing. But even nowadays it occurs in programming when writing source codes, this script is written by screenplays. By the way, car plates are also written with a monospaced font.

To save space and reduce the size of the device, many keys were often removed. For example, the numbers were replaced with homographic letters, hyphens and dashes were the same, like quotes.

Using

Most of the twentieth century, all official government documents were typewritten, publishers also demanded to bring printed texts, as this greatly facilitated the work of the typesetters.

In the middle of the twentieth century, with the advent of personal computers, typewriters were a thing of the past. But the font of the typewriter is still actively used by designers. It looks great in many styles, gives the effect of vintage. The impression is created of a man-made, not executed soulless machine.

What is the font of a typewriter called?

Currently, there are more than 15 of their varieties for Photoshop. Each font typewriter for "Photoshop" simulates either the style of a certain device, or writing in different publications (newspapers, printing). Many styles are available both in Cyrillic and in Latin. The most similar is the B52 font with its large distance between the characters and the effect of abrasion. There are other fonts, for example:

  • DS Moster has a rather interesting effect, in which some characters are printed fatter. And the letters are not exactly in the line, but "dance", making the text very realistic.
  • Underwood completely copies the writing style of the eponymous machine.
  • Harting and 1942 Report look very shabby, as if the paint in the typewriter begins to end.
  • Junkos Typewriter is strongly stylized, the letters in it are of different size and uneven, a lot of "ink spots".
  • Type Writer, Type wrong and King are closer to the computer or typographic set, they are clear, even and without small spots.
  • Old Newspaper is similar to the style of printing in newspapers in the early twentieth century.

To date, we have a huge number of opportunities. Fonts are used almost everywhere, from government documents to advertising and art. Font of the typewriter will give the effect of antiquity to any site or image.
