Why are bald men considered more attractive?

If you, like many other men, recently looked in the mirror and noticed the first signs of hair loss, then you will be glad to know that there is a simple solution to this problem - shaving your head.

According to a new study conducted by Albert Mannes at the University of Pennsylvania, people with shaved heads are perceived more courageous, stronger, higher compared to those who have normal or thinning hair. They are also often perceived as leaders.

The scientist conducted three experiments and found that men with shaved heads are rated as dominant. He also came to the conclusion that men whose hair was shaved are perceived by others as stronger than they are in reality. In addition, he noted that men who suffer from natural hair loss, can improve their image by shaving.

According to scientists, two-thirds of men lose part of their hair under the age of 35, and by the age of 50, the losses are already noticeable and significant. So it is likely that the results of the research of Dr. Mannesom will be welcomed by many people.

So, what experiments did the scientist conduct in his research?

Study number 1: men with shaved heads are perceived as dominant and more authoritative

In this study, 59 volunteers participated. They were shown 25 photos of various men, of whom only 10 had shaved heads. The rest of the men had hairstyles, different in color, length and shape. Participants were asked to rate each photo based on the perceived power, influence and authority of men with hair and shaved heads. The results showed that men with shaved heads were marked as dominant compared to those who had hair.

Study number 2: bald men look taller and stronger than they really are

In the second study, 344 participants showed photos of different men. On the first photo there was a man with his real hair, and on the second - with a shaved head. Participants perceived bald men as more dominant. Also volunteers said that bald men are an inch higher than they are in fact, and 13% stronger.

The results of the first experiment can be explained by the fact that people who decide to shave their hair, in fact, are dominant. Nevertheless, the results of the second experiment can not be justified in the same way, since it was the same person who was previously seen with hair.

Study # 3: written descriptions confirm previous results

In conclusion, the study participants were given written descriptions of people. The photos were not used. More than 500 adults evaluated their perceptions of a particular person, based on information they took from written descriptions. These descriptions were the same, except for the part in which it was spoken about the hair. In men who in descriptions were bald, leadership potential, strength, courage and domination were rated higher.

Explaining the effect

Mannes argues that the connection between the shaved head and domination comes from cultural associations. In our society, the head is shaved more often by representatives of typically male professions. Thus, domination can arise through stereotyped associations with such people.

Mannes believes that people who take the initiative and voluntarily shave their heads, give the impression that they are bold and dominant and more attractive. Such people take active steps to improve their image.

The study also showed that men with thinning hair look less manly than those who shave them. Thus, bald men are perceived as more honest than those who try to hide the condition of their hair.

Instead of spending billions of dollars every year trying to find a cure for hair loss, you can offer men a more effective and logical decision: shave their head.

So men, for whom hair loss has become a real problem, now have hope. The solution is simple: shave your head and you will be able to improve your image in the shortest possible time. Those of you who have already taken this bold step will be pleased to learn that your sporting image is perceived as dominant and truly courageous.
