Rose Crocus Rose: description and care

Roses are considered to be one of the most beautiful flowers in the world. Despite thousands of existing varieties, breeders annually breed several dozen new ones. Among them, the rose Crocus Rose, which has appeared relatively recently, has become popular among flower growers. How to care for this variety, what its features and what the Crocus Rose think about domestic gardeners, will be told in this article.

The history of the appearance of Crocus Rose

Who is David Austin, knows anyone who professionally grows roses. This is a world-famous breeder from Britain, specializing in roses. Having founded his own company in 1969, Austin concentrated on the development of new varieties of so-called English roses, which since the 80's are still considered the best in the world.

In 2000, Mr. Austin introduced the world to a new variety. It was a white rose Crocus Rose, named her creator in honor of the fund to fight cancer The Crocus Trust. This grade was derived based on the previously patented by Austin in 1992, the prize-winner Golden Celebration.

Other variety names

Shortly after the presentation Crocus Rose became very popular. Outside the UK, gardeners began giving him other names. So, many amateur gardeners are frightened when, instead of the ordered rose, Crocus Rose is sent to them by the seedling Emmanuel, although in reality this is the same variety.

It is also sometimes referred to as City of Timaru or a completely dissonant name Ausquest given during registration. Many domestic gardeners call this plant a crocus-rose, and sometimes white (peach, apricot) caustic - in honor of its creator.

This variety belongs to the class of shrabov (direct growing shrubs and half-lobed roses in Russia, called parklands). Among the non-formally identified species of sliver rose Crocus Rose belongs to the nostalgic group, a sub-group of English roses.

According to the official characteristics of this plant, the height of the bush can reach 1.2 m with a width of not more than 0.9 m. The leaves of the rose have a deep dark green hue and a semi-glossy surface.

As for the flowers, they are small in size - the diameter does not exceed 8 cm. The color of the roses varies from white to light peach. The aroma of the flowers is quite rich, but not sharp, characteristic of most tea-hybrid varieties. Roses on the bushes blossom brushes, 3-5 pcs. On one brush, thanks to which at the time of flowering the whole bush is evenly covered with beautiful and fragrant flowers.

Features of the variety

Has a number of unusual features of Rose Crocus Rose. The description of flowers of this variety is usually reduced to the fact that they are light peach color. But in reality it is not quite so. The peculiarity of this rose is that it gradually changes the shade.

In the bud stage, the color of the plant is close to peach or apricot. But when the flower starts to blossom, the outer petals lose their former beauty, becoming almost white, and only the middle of the rose retains the original shade. It is because of this feature that David Austin initially wanted to name the variety a white rose, but later changed his mind.

Another feature of Crocus Rose is its resistance to rain and frost. Because the birthplace of the flower is rainy Britain, this is not surprising. Thanks to the ability of the plant to tolerate a temperature drop of -29 degrees, it has taken root in Europe, the CIS and the middle lane of Russia.

Also, the creator of the brand positioned Crocus Rose as a plant that can withstand one of the most common fungal diseases of roses - powdery mildew and black spot.

Optimal place and soil for planting roses of this variety

This variety, despite its small height, has deep roots. Therefore, a plant older than 6 years is almost impossible to transplant.

Rose Crocus Rose loves the sun, so when choosing a landing site it is desirable to find a well-lit place. But it is worth considering that this plant tolerates a bad heat (it can cause burns on the petals). The optimal place will be the eastern or western side of the house, but not the southern one. By the way, should pay attention to groundwater in the planned site of planting roses, otherwise the plant will hurt, as the roots of Crocus Rose in depth can reach more than 1 m.

As a primer for Crocus Rose, chernozem or loamy soil is best suited. However, the plant must be periodically fertilized.

When using fertilizers, it is important to pay attention to the acidity of the soil. Rose Crocus Rose loves slightly acid soil (level 6-6.5). If the acidity is too low, it can be increased by fertilizing the plant with manure or peat. When the acidity is high, it must be reduced to an acceptable level by the addition of wood ash.

How to Plant a Bush Crocus Rose

When planting a Crocus Rose bush, it's best to work together, because, despite the simplicity of the performed actions, it's not easy to do it alone. The pit for the bush of roses should be at least 0.7 m deep. A ten-centimeter layer of expanded clay or other drainage material falls on the bottom, a layer of fertilizers is laid on top of the same size (selected in accordance with the acidity of the soil). Next lies the prepared sifted garden soil in which the plant will be planted.

10-20 minutes before planting, the roots of the seedlings must be immersed in the soil dissolved in water, then carefully lower the plant in a previously prepared pit, so that the neck of the bush is 3 cm below the surface of the earth. While one man holds the bush of a rose evenly, the second man falls asleep with a hole in the ground. After planting, the plant is watered under the root. When the earth settles around the seedling, it is necessary to fill it.

How to care for roses Crocus Rose

To the rose bush grows well and blossoms, care is needed. Once a season, the plant needs to be fertilized. In the spring it is necessary to use nitrogen-containing fertilizers, and in the summer potassium-containing and phosphorus-containing fertilizers. In autumn and winter, the flower needs protection from the cold. Despite the fact that this plant is able to withstand frosts down to -29 degrees, even when the temperature drops to -7, the rose bushes should be hidden.

Before you cover the plant, the roots of the rose must be grounded. From above it is necessary to cover with dry leaves or fir-tree lapnika. Then, above each bush, a wire frame is placed separately, which should be higher by 0.2-0.3 m of the bush itself. On top of the frame there is a thermal insulation material, and polyethylene film is laid over the entire structure. In March-April, before removing the insulation from the bushes, you should first ventilate them, letting you gradually get used to the temperature.

Another important element of caring for the Rose Crocus Rose is its timely pruning. During the first year of life in the bush in a new place, early flowers should be cut (before August). It is necessary that the forces of the plant go on the development of the root system and stems. At the end of summer a few flowers on the bush are left to the next year the plant blooms abundantly.

The pruning of the Crocus Rose stems should be done every spring and autumn. In the spring, as buds form on the stems, it is important to immediately cut off old dead branches. Also, using this procedure, you can form a bush shape. In autumn, pruning is carried out to remove the parts of the plant that have become infected in the summer, so that they do not destroy the whole bush during the winter.

Rose Crocus Rose: reviews

Despite its fairly "young" age, this variety of roses has become very popular. Many amateur gardeners in Russia and the CIS have managed to appreciate the beauty and fragrance that Rose Crocus Rose has.

Photos, reviews and personal observations of enthusiastic gardeners who literally fell in love with this variety can often be found on the Internet. In particular, they noted the fact that in Russia and the CIS, the size of bushes and flowers themselves exceed those declared by Austin. Thus, the average flower size reaches 7-10 cm (the maximum is declared 8 cm).

The disease resistance attributed to this cultivar proved to be a myth in practice. Crocus Rose is also prone to powdery mildew disease, as is his progenitor Golden Celebration, so the plant needs to be sprayed with special preparations. In other respects corresponds to the properties of rose Crocus Rose declared by Austin (description, photos of the plant confirm this).

To date, the Crocus Rose variety is one of the most loved in the world. Despite its capriciousness, in comparison with other varieties, this one for more than fifteen years of existence has proved to be the most tenacious and beautiful.
