The future ice king was born in 1970 in Siauliai - a quiet Lithuanian city not far from Kaunas. According to the family tradition, the boy was called Povilas, or rather, Povilas the fourth. But Mom Povilas, Lilia Vanagena, was a single-figure skater and seven-time champion of her country in this sport. Grandpa Povilas on the maternal line was the director of the Kaunas central rink, and my mother at that time already worked as a coach and from a small age took her son with her to the rink. In three years he learned to stand on skates and even ride a little. But in 1976, at the age of six, he first participated in competitions. In addition to figure skating, the boy was also fascinated by other sports: basketball, volleyball, etc. At the age of 17, he decided to put an end to the sport, and if not for some circumstances, the world probably would not recognize a figure skater named Povilas Vanagas.

Biography outside sports

His life for a time was going on a different, not sporting, channel. He expressed a desire to follow in the footsteps of relatives on the paternal line and studied at the medical school. Then he wanted to study international law, and for this purpose the young man went to Moscow to enter MGIMO, but, unfortunately, he could not beat the contest, even though he passed the exams. When the time came to serve in the army, he, as a former sportsman, was sent to the CSKA club. Here he again got on skates, and began to ride not in solitary, but in pair skating. His constant partner was Margarita Drobyazko. For two years of service in the army, he perfectly mastered the pair skating, and after the collapse of the USSR decided to represent his country at international championships. With him in Kaunas his partner, Margarita, also went. Soon the pair came to success, first in the championships of the country, and then of Europe and the World. In 2005, Povilas Vanagas, along with his faithful partner and already his wife, decided to return to the sport and immediately won gold medals at the national championship.
