Length MKAD and some historical facts

MKAD is one of the largest and most famous highways in the world. It has a long history, during which the reconstruction and improvement of this project took place. The Moscow Ring Road is located on the territory of Moscow and its environs. Even now, there is an improvement in its traffic interchanges for the convenience of motorists, which will make traffic jams and bottlenecks minimal. What is the length of the Moscow Ring Road?

History of creation

The length of the Moscow Ring Road and its components is constantly changing. This is due to the increase in the total traffic flow. Its history dates back to 1937. At this time, the design of a new highway in the Moscow area began. A year later, construction began, but it was suspended because of the war. Instead of a new project, another plan was developed and the roads were laid along existing ones. These works took only one month. The length of the Moscow Ring Road during this period was not very large. At the end of the war, the problem arose of expanding the road, as well as its reconstruction. The road surface has now become unusable, which made it difficult to move. In addition, the traffic increased, which required an extension of the route.

Modern highway

The first reconstruction took place between 1957 and 1962. So there was a road, which exists in our time. The length of the Moscow Ring Road was 109 kilometers. Its name is due to an unusual configuration. The road covered the territory of Moscow or most of it with a ring in the form of a not even oval. MKAD had four lanes for traffic to each side. In the 60's, this capacity (36 thousand cars per day) was sufficient. However, with the development of machine building, the flow of machines has increased. MKAD required another reconstruction. However, it was postponed because of large material costs.

New road

The problem of expanding the route was brewing every year. It increased the accident rate several times. Lighting was meager, and congestion was high. Ground transitions became unsafe, which led to the death of people. Perestroika began in 1994. As a result, the number of bands increased to five in each direction. Throughout the route, lampposts were installed , which illuminate it well. Instead of ground-based pedestrian crossings , underground ones were equipped. Also, multi-level interchanges were invented and designed to increase throughput and eliminate congestion.

Current problems

The length of Moscow Ring Road in Moscow and its capacity at the present time again does not meet the requirements. The flow of machines is constantly increasing, so it can not cope with the task in view - to ensure the smooth running of transport. There is a new problem of reconstruction and construction of congresses and interchanges. In 2008, the construction of a new fourth ring of the road began. However, by 2011 it was suspended due to the need for large capital investments. Now the question of continuing reconstruction is being decided. The length of the MKAD can increase, but the solution to the problem will be a more convenient road with high throughput.
