Lampposts: what are they and what are they made of?

For a long time already forgotten are the times when street lighting was provided with poles with oil lamps, which were lit up in the evening by streetlamps. Today this tradition is transferred to various performances. It introduces, rather, some variety than practical use. Modern street lamps (lanterns) are high-tech devices that provide sufficient illumination of the sidewalk and the carriageway in the dark.

This not only made the cities safer, but also allowed to decorate each street with a string of lights. In addition, modern landscape designers skillfully use lanterns of various shapes and sizes for transforming the garden and placing accents on the site in the dark.

The most important task that faces the designers of outdoor lighting is the choice of materials. Lamp pillars can be manufactured in a variety of ways. However, each such construction will have different properties. This fact must be taken into account, since in individual situations individual requirements can be claimed, failure of which can lead to collapse of the structure.

The first lampposts were made of wood, as this material was widely distributed in construction and is easily accessible. In addition, it did not require a significant height of these structures - it was easy to get a lamp to the tanks with oil and a burner. However, at the same time they should not have interfered with the passing crews. The main disadvantage of these designs was their small ability to withstand the effects of the external environment.

Over the past several decades, lampposts have been made of concrete. Of course, over time, the brand of this material was improved, which had a positive effect on quality characteristics. Nevertheless, the main indicators changed insignificantly, which allows us to generalize the data obtained and talk about the material as a whole. It is a solid and resistant to many environmental factors. Products from it have a long life. The disadvantages include considerable weight and considerable cost. Lamp pillars made of concrete have a porous structure, so they remain prone to fungi and mold.

Currently, street lighting is performed using all modern developments and materials. An excellent example of manufacturability can become pillars made of aluminum or steel. Metal construction is quite light and durable, and most importantly - safe. While the fall of the concrete base in a collision with all weight falls on the car of the unlucky driver, street lights and fixtures on a metal base, so to speak, bend the car. This technology saved from the death of more than one person, which only proves its effectiveness in such cases. It should be noted that for other characteristics these products are not inferior to concrete ones.
