Jokhar Tsarnayev: waiting for execution in the American prison

Jokhar Tsaronayev, a US citizen of Chechen descent, was convicted by an American court of committing a terrorist act in 2013 in Boston, Massachusetts and sentenced to death. The investigation suspects of complicity in the crime of his elder brother Tamerlane, who was killed while attempting to arrest.

Explosions in Boston

The terrorist act occurred on one of the world's most famous marathon races. Two homemade bombs were located near the finish line. During the final stage of the sport competition, many spectators and journalists gathered in this place. The explosive devices detonated with an interval of several seconds. The total number of victims was 280 people. Some of the wounded had their limbs torn off. Three, including the 8-year-old child, died. According to information received from doctors and investigators, the bombs were stuffed with nails and metal balls. The police urgently evacuated the spectators and participants of the race from the place of the tragic event. In the city, all public institutions were closed, residents were advised not to leave their homes.

The development of events after the explosions

Law enforcement agencies received from witnesses a description of the appearance of the suspects, as well as their images from security cameras. The identity of the alleged criminals was identified. Three days after the terrorist attack in the city of Watertown, two more incidents took place, involving Jokhar Tsarnaev and his elder brother. They shot and killed a 27-year-old police officer, then stole the car, taking his owner hostage. According to the victim, the brothers told him that they are the organizers of the explosions.

Arrest

Police officers identified the Tsaranaevs on a street in Watertown. There was a gunfight in which two officers were seriously injured. According to eyewitness accounts, the brothers had a whole arsenal of weapons, including hand grenades. Jokhar Tsarnaev was wounded, but managed to escape. Leaving the place of the shooting, he moved the car of his older brother. A few hours later, Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in the hospital from the injuries.

A large-scale raid was organized, in which thousands of police officers took part. One of the city's residents reported that the wounded suspect hid in the backyard of his house. Representatives of the law arrested Jokhar Tsarnaev. At the time of detention, no weapons were found.

Trial

At the first public hearing, Jokhar Tsarnaev did not agree to admit his guilt. His sanity and ability to bear responsibility for his actions were proved. Lawyers tried to convince the jury and judge that Johar was a victim of manipulation by Tamerlane. Representatives of the prosecution argued that the reason for his actions was in extremist views.

The court came to the conclusion that Tsarnaev took part in laying down bombs and was present at the murder of a police officer in the city of Watertown. He was found guilty on all points put forward by the prosecutor's office during the hearings. The judge decided that the death penalty should be imposed for the crimes committed by Jokhar Tsarnaev. The death penalty, in accordance with US law, is carried out by lethal injection.

Motivation

According to FBI investigators, the Tsarinaevs acted on the basis of extremist convictions, but were not associated with any known terrorist group. The technology of making bombs, they learned from sources on the Internet. According to Johar, their actions were motivated by the desire to take revenge on the United States for conducting military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Features of the US judicial system

Currently, Jokhar Tsarayev in the strict regime prison awaits his further fate. Because of the specifics of US legislation, the prospects for carrying out the sentence remain undefined. In Massachusetts, where the terrorist act took place, the death penalty has been abolished since 1984. The verdict to Tsaranaev was made at the federal level. This gives lawyers ample opportunities for appeals. This is what Johar Tsarnaev expects. Execution will take place in many years, if legal procedures are delayed. It is possible that he will succeed in completely avoiding the execution of the death sentence.
