Over the past decades, the city from a small agricultural region has turned into a bustling center of North Karelia. In 1954, the local population was 24 thousand inhabitants. And already in 1970 it grew to 36 thousand people. During the same period, Joensuu undertook many activities to improve social security.

In the life of the capital, a huge role is played by the local university, opened in 1969. Today the school has eight faculties and nine independent departments. As the settlement grew into it, neighboring villages gradually began to enter it. And already in our century in the city included two municipalities located in the neighborhood.
