The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is considered one of the largest and most important cultural and educational institutions of Moscow and the country. Here is stored an impressive collection of works of world art from ancient times to the present day.

About the museum

There is a Pushkin Museum on Volkhonka Street, directly opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, located in the heart of the capital. Today it is a whole museum town. In addition to the main building, it includes the Gallery of Art of Europe and America of the 19-20th centuries, the Department of Personal Collections, the House of Graphics, the Center for Aesthetic Education "Museion", the Memorial Apartment of S. It shows European painting of the 13th-18th centuries, the art of Ancient Egypt, sculpted casts of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. In the Egyptian hall one of the best collections of authentic objects is presented, such as sarcophagi, mummies, ornaments, figurines, masks and so on.

Exhibition activity

Exhibitions Pushkin conducts practically since its opening, along with such well-known organizers of international events as the British Museum, the Louvre and others. In different years, you could see priceless creations of Titian ("Venus of Urbino"), Leonardo da Vinci ("Gioconda"), Antonello de Messina ("Saint Sebastian"), Parmindjanino ("Anteyu").

For temporary exhibitions the Museum. Pushkin invites regularly. They take place in several areas of the complex, namely in the Main building, in the Department of Personal Collections, in the Gallery of Art, in the children's center "Museion".

The main direction of the Pushkin Museum's activity is that diverse, covering the themes of all the available collections of the exhibition are held here. The Museum. Pushkin combines various exhibition genres, among them: thematic, collectible, publications, interpretations.

Important events for 2014

From June 26 to October 19, the exhibition "Rubens, Van Dyke, Jordaens ..." is held in the Pushkin Museum. The museum acquaints guests with the world masterpieces of Flemish painters from the collections of major American and European museums. One of the best collections, where the works of the above-listed artists and their contemporaries are stored, belongs to the prince of Liechtenstein. Attention to visitors are 55 works of outstanding Flemish 17th century, among them:

• Works of Rubens (19 paintings), created in different genres and in different years of creativity. These are portraits and works of major formats of mythological and religious themes. Of particular interest is the famous painting "Marcy Rhea Silvia" and simultaneously shown a sketch to it, as well as a trellis woven over it. It is impossible not to mention such masterpieces as "The finding of the baby Erichthony" and "Portrait of Clara Serena".
• Ten paintings by Van Dyke - the master of the portrait. Among the works presented at different periods in Genoa and Antwerp, one of the artist's best creations is the Portrait of Maria de Tassis.
• Four works of the early creative period of the Flemish painter Jacques Jordaens.
• Pictures of the famous animalist Frans Snyders, distinguished by a dynamic manner of writing.
• The creations of the sons of the great Peter Brueghel Mouzhitsky, which for centuries have been of special value to collectors all over the world. Among them - "Landscape with Tobias and the Angel" (Jan Brueghel the Elder) and "Census in Bethlehem" (Peter Brueghel the Younger).

The exhibition "William Hogarth: Beauty Analysis" (from August 8 to September 7) is held in connection with the year of British culture in Russia. Presented 68 engravings of the famous British engraver and painter, as well as engravings made by French engravers on the famous paintings of Hogarth. In addition, exhibited illustrations to the artist's treatise "Analysis of Beauty", which gave the name of the exhibition. The treatise is not scientific, it is the creative manifesto of the master, in which he helps to answer the question of what is beautiful in art and what is ugly.

In the halls where the permanent exposition is located, near the antique monuments successfully disguised samples of modern art. "Mimicry" - the so-called exhibition of the famous artist from Belgium, Wim Delvoy, who presented more than 20 works in the genre of neobarochnoy and pseudo-gothic sculpture. Completed with the latest technology from marble, carved steel and other materials, cutting-edge, ironic works amaze with high-quality execution and the ability to unusually beat everyday objects.

The first exhibition in the new building of the Department of Personal Collections

This year (2014) celebrated its 20th anniversary recently moved to the new building of the Museum of Private Collections of the Pushkin Museum. Pushkin. Exhibitions and permanent exhibitions present visitors with works of Russian and Western European art from the 15th and 20th centuries that were donated to the museum's fund from the 1980s to the present. Here there are completely different in structure and direction collections, including more than 7000 creations of painting, graphics, applied art, artistic photography, sculpture.

From April 16 to September 15 in the Department of Personal Collections there is an original exhibition called "Apartment-Museum". There are works of art, as well as objects of everyday life of famous collectors, artists, architects. Guests will immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the apartment of the collector I. Sanovich, the cabinet of the draftsman Y. Chernikhov, who dreamed of the architecture of the future, the workshop of the Shtilenberg-Alfeyevsky family, where the creative life of more than one generation of artists took place. Here you can see the study of the archive of the graphic artist of the twenties of the last century D. Tarkhov, which was presented by L. Tarkhov, and works of artists of 1920-1940, exhibited by the collector from Moscow Roman Babichev.
