Dormir belongs to the most frequent verbs of the French language, although it belongs to the third group - to verbs with singularities of conjugation. With this verb there is a huge number of phraseological units and winged expressions, such as, for example, dormir comme une marmotte (sleeping like a marmot). The meaning of the verb implies a stopping time, so they say dormir pour toujours (fall asleep forever).

In Présent, the verb conjugates as follows:

• Ends of the singular: -s, -s, -t.
• Plural endings: -mons, -mez, -ment.
• The basis of the verb has the form dor-, with it the various endings of dormir will be combined.

Conjugation in Imparfait:

• Ends of the singular: -mais, -mais, -mait.
• Plural endings: -mions, -miez, -maient.

The auxiliary verb (l'auxiliaire), involved in the formation of complex times - is always avoir. The form of the participle for them is dormi. Knowing the form of the participle and the endings of the être and avoir verbs in these times will be sufficient for the reproduction of the dormir paradigm - conjugation is not difficult.

A complex system of French verbs, especially those that are irregular, requires memorizing by heart. This does not mean that you need to keep in mind the conjugation paradigm of each verb - they are still grouped according to certain characteristics, which makes it easier to memorize.

To simplify the task of remembering, one should keep in mind the rules and exceptions from them. For example, there is a rule that transitive (transitifs) verbs conjugate with the verb avoir in difficult times, and intransitifs with être. The verb dormir is an exception to the rule.

A more difficult task is to choose the right verb time, which depends on the meaning of the sentence and is used to construct it. Therefore, it is important to absorb the conjugation of the verb dormir, as well as of other basic verbs of the French language, to such a level that you do not need to remember the shape at the right time, if necessary.
