When does carrots start growing in spring? Planting and sowing calendar for truck farmers

Experienced gardener in advance preparing for the sowing of carrots. They know that without observing certain agrotechnical techniques and the timing of planting a good harvest, do not get it.

When does carrots start growing in spring?

For sowing any vegetable, optimal soil temperature is needed. Optimal terms of work are determined by the conditions of climatic zones.

Carrot sowing in the spring for gardeners in the south of Russia has long begun: the early carrots had to be planted in March, the mid-ripening - in April, the podzimnee storage - in early May.

In the climate of the central Russia (Central Regions, Siberia, the Urals) to the terms of work should be approached reasonably and especially not to hurry. Night frosts can damage plants or, at best, inhibit their germination.

An indication of the readiness of the soil for sowing carrots is its heating to a temperature of at least 4 degrees at night. Sown carrots in spring for a good harvest you need to start when the soil becomes loose enough, excess moisture will go away. If, after compression in the hand, the earth remains a lump, it should not be planted yet: after digging and loosening, too much moisture remains in the soil, which will impede the access of oxygen to the seeds. After the gradual warming of the soil, when excess moisture goes away, and night frosts pass, carrots can be sown in the spring. Usually this is the end of April, the beginning is the middle of May.

Planting carrots in spring: calendar

A hint for gardeners is the phases of the moon. It is believed that you can not engage in planting works during the new moon and full moon. In April-May-June 2015 full moon dates: April - 5, May - 6, June - 3; New Moon: April - 18, 19, May - 18, 19, 20, June - 16, 17, 18.

Root crops are planted in the phase of the aging (decreasing) moon, after the full moon.

Based on the calculations, it will be beneficial to plant carrots in spring:

  • In May - from 8 to 18;
  • In June - from 4 to 15.

The optimal time for sowing carrots in spring is the first decade of May. The condition of the soil is close to ideal for work with root crops: there are no night frosts, there is still moisture in the soil.

It is more difficult to count by the standing of the moon in the signs of the zodiac. This approach determines how favorable the following terms of sowing carrots in the spring of 2015:

  • The end of April - 25, 28, 29, 30;
  • May - 8, 9, from 12-17, 27;
  • June - 4,5.

Given the lunar calendar and the condition of the soil in the garden, you can safely prepare for the work.

Seeds of carrots: where to take, how to buy?

Experienced gardener prepare their seeds. Carrots - a biennial plant, the seeds are obtained after flowering root crops for the second year. This is done simply: the best carrot grows (in the opinion of the owner, it is better not one), in the beginning of May it lands on a bed. Flowering carrots are a wonderful honey plant, so you can identify the place next to the cucumber greenhouses. In the garden looks very aesthetically pleasing, like a large flowering plant with small white flowers collected in inflorescences umbrellas. By September-October, the seeds ripen. The plant is better cut with umbrellas, put ripen vertically for a week or two, then you can put it horizontally before collecting the seeds. Seeds can be stored in the cold, the only obstacle to a good harvest can be their constant soaking.

Seed organizations sell their selection seeds, they can be bought online (do it better a month before planting) or in branded stores.

Buying seeds in small chambers, in non-specialized department stores can cause a low yield: in the bag may not be the sort, a small amount or expired seeds.

Buying seeds from random vendors, even observing the terms of sowing carrots in spring, you can find yourself without harvest.

Granules, seeds on tape or loose: what is better?

Those truck farmers who produce carrots in the spring with granules, know that even though these seeds are more expensive, fry with them less. The structure of the granules includes growth stimulants and microelements. In order for them to "work", when germinating, they must be kept moist in the soil constantly: if such granules have dried up, the carrot seeds will not germinate through the shell. At observance of all agrotechnical receptions the crop from granules above, labor expenses on thinning is less: seeds in granules need to be planted less often, as germination is better.

Seeds on the ribbon: it is believed that this method is good for "lazy", spread out strips, sprinkled with earth, poured - and will grow a lot of carrots, do not thin out. Not everything is so obvious! Purchased seeds on the tape are simply processed with an adhesive substance, their germination is absolutely the same as that of the simple ones. Therefore, if the seed did not rise - just a "bald spot" in the seedling line. And if the germination capacity of seeds is not guaranteed, it is necessary to put in the furrow not one but two, sometimes three tapes. Many gardeners prefer to plant seeds on a tape "in their own execution." For this, the paste is brewed, cooled, they are greased with pre-prepared strips of thin paper (usually toilet paper), seeds are poured neatly.

Seeding of carrots in spring with ordinary seeds is the most traditional. Ogorodniki either prepare the seeds (soaking for several days in a canvas bag), or not. Often, even no preparation is needed: seeds from the sachet (or their harvested ones) are poured into the grooves, slightly pressed down, they are filled with a loose drainage layer (sand, peat with sand). It is believed that for a good harvest, even with poor (unknown) germination, it is necessary to plant in five lines, making rows in twenty centimeters.

Soil preparation

For carrots you need a good fertile soil, and its layer should be higher than the size of carrots (preferably not less than half a meter).

Fresh manure for carrots can not be introduced.

The best predecessors: beans, onions, cucumbers.

Since autumn, you can dig up a garden bed, preparing it for planting carrots in spring. The methods of organic farming make it possible not to dig the earth, but only to work with a flat cutter. You can leave the bed untreated if there is a catastrophic lack of time.

In the spring it is necessary to prepare a bed: it is better to treat the soil to a sufficient depth with the same Fokine flat-cutter, choosing weeds, especially perennials. The shovel cuts the roots of the weeds, thereby increasing their number. The introduction of humus before processing gives positive results.

Formed beds should stand for at least a day, so that the soil is slightly condensed.

How to sow carrots?

On the surface of the beds, transverse grooves are marked, laying them through 20-25 cm.

Some truck farmers prefer to sow carrots on narrow (50 cm) long ridges, placing grooves not across, but along.

At the bottom of the groove you can pour a light layer of sand - this will facilitate an overview of the decomposed seeds.

If necessary, it may be spilled if the soil is dry.

Seeds of granulated carrots need to be neatly decomposed after 1-2 cm, sprinkled with a layer of either river sand, or a mixture of peat with sand.

Seeds on the tape should be laid out carefully in the grooves, immediately fixing the ends of the ribbons. Otherwise, they can be displaced by the wind, then the seeds will be peeled off. In a furrow it is necessary to stack at once some ribbons (it is desirable three) through 1 see Sprinkle the earth (peat and sand), to shed.

Ordinary seeds pour into grooves, slightly press down, they fill up with a loose drainage layer (sand, peat with sand).

To cover or not to cover crops of carrots?

If you chose an early planting time for carrots in spring, then the beds are usually covered. For shelter, you need two layers: lutrasil (spunbond) and the top of the film. Non-woven material will protect crops from the greenhouse effect and overheating, and the film - from hypothermia.

The shelter should be raised from the soil: a close fit will not allow the shoots to climb to the desired height. You can do it this way: at the edges of the bed, lay out the bars or narrow boards, put a shelter on them, and turn the edges under them. To hide does not blown away by the wind, you need to crush the edges with something heavy (bricks). To raise the shelter is undesirable until germination: if the weather is dry and hot during the day, the crops can dry up, and the extra watering will change the structure of the soil.

In the case of late planting, when there is no threat of light frosts and cooling, it is better to lay a layer of mulch on the furrows (fallen pine needles, straw). It is necessary that the seeds themselves are not washed out during irrigation.

When should we expect sprouts to appear?

Carrot sprouts appear unfriendly, the first can ascend 10 days later, the main mass after 14-16 days. The plant has a long vegetation period (early-ripening carrots - 90 days, medium - 110, medium late - 130, late - ripening - 150), weeds and pests without appropriate treatments can significantly reduce yield.

Sowing carrots in the spring involves a three-stage struggle against weeds (weeding) and double thinning. The first stage is immediately after the identification of plants, that is, when they can be distinguished from weeds. Weeds are removed very carefully, trying not to damage the carrots. The second time - a month and a half after planting, then the roots are thinned for the first time. When thinning, try to keep the plants at a distance of not less than 1 cm from each other. When sown with tapes and granules, the first thinning can be omitted.

The second thinning, combined with the third weeding, should be done two to two and a half months after planting, then the plants are left at a distance of 3-4 cm.

When weeding and thinnings, do not forget to mulch the plants with peat and "dust" with wood ash.

Sealing of landings

Experienced truck farmers, knowing that the carrots will not soon rise, plant in the inter-row plants with a short growing season. Most often, a bow is planted on a feather. By the time when the carrots will grow, onions will no longer remain in the beds. For carrots, this neighborhood is very useful: carrot fly (the most malicious pest of carrots) does not tolerate the smell of onions.

A good sealant will be planting garlic from seeds (first year) on the head. The onion fly does not like it either.
