In 1996, women's football was added. At the very beginning of the development of the Olympic Games, professional clubs were prohibited from participating in competitions. At the dawn of the 20th century, the leading football team was the United Kingdom. It was she who won prizes for several Games in a row. Represented the UK amateur national team of England. In its composition, strangely enough, included football players-professionals. 1932 was marked by the fact that football was excluded from the list of Olympic sports. There were two reasons for this. First of all, it was believed that football is not interesting for US residents (and the Olympics-1932 was planned there). Secondly, the FIFA Federation did not want this promising sport to be in the shadow of such a world-famous action as the Olympics.
Football was restored in the lists in 1936. In view of the fact that athletes quickly reached a high professional level, FIFA allowed to participate in the Olympics to professional players. Only those who did not participate in the world championships remained under the ban. In 1992, there were age limits: the team should not have more than 3 players, whose age exceeds 23 years.
