Tortillas - it's tasty and simple. How to cook them at home and how to use ready-made tortillas?

Tortillas are cakes that came to us from far-away Mexico. They are somewhat similar to all known lavash: a thin rolled out dough, toasted in a frying pan. To taste they are quite unusual, not quite like simple bread. But the most important is that they must be in hot form, only then you can feel their indescribable taste.

The name itself translates as a "round cake", and is pronounced in two ways: "tortilla" or "cake". In Spanish, the second option is correct, but for the Russian ear the first is more familiar.

In Mexico tortilla is one of the most common foods used for food. That only of them do not cook! With the help of flat cakes they eat sauces, dip them into goulash, stuff them with a wide variety of fillings.

Now "round cakes" can be purchased in our stores, but it is not so easy to do, because not everyone has them on sale. And the taste is much inferior to this: the dough is more like rubber.

Cooking a tortilla at home

Home-made tortilla is prepared elementary and does not take much time. To make a delicious cake, you need a minimum of ingredients. In addition, there are several ways to prepare. Traditionally, tortillas are tortillas made from corn dough. But if you use the usual, they are not less delicious. Let's look at both ways.

Corn tortilla

Necessary ingredients:

  • Two glasses of corn flour;
  • One and a half glasses of water;
  • Half a teaspoon of salt;
  • A little vegetable oil for frying.

Preparation

To begin with, mix the flour and salt. Quietly pour water into the bowl while mixing the dough. It should look like plasticine: soft, dry and supple.

Mass the cut into small pieces and roll them into thin cakes. The dough should not be torn. If this happens, add some more water.

It is very important to choose the right frying pan. The best choice for a tortilla is cast iron, because it evenly distributes the heat. Add some oil to the frying pan and fry the tortillas first on one side, and then on the other until they get a slightly golden color. Ready-made tortillas cover something to keep them warm.

Flour tortillas

If for some reason the corn meal option does not suit you, but you want to make tortillas, the flour dough recipe is for you.

Ingredients:

  • Four glasses of flour;
  • A small spoonful of baking powder;
  • A spoonful of salt;
  • glass of water;
  • A little vegetable oil.

Cooking process

In a fairly large bowl, mix the flour, salt and baking powder. Then add a little vegetable oil or fat. Stir well the dough so that there are no lumps. Make a small groove and pour half of the water in it, stir it, and then add the rest. The resulting dough should be slightly sticky.

Leave it for about ten minutes. Slice and roll them. Fry the tortillas in a frying pan. As soon as you see that there are bubbles, then they are ready.

Where to use the tortilla

Both cooked houses and bought flat cakes are a great snack. It's enough just to choose a filler: here you can fantasize almost unlimitedly! For example, it's very tasty with a chicken fried in a frying pan and feta cheese. Another variant of the filling is beef and red beans.

Just like lavash, tortillas can be filled with grated cheese with mayonnaise, garlic and greens, and then cut into small pieces.

Do not be afraid to experiment. They can be filled even with shrimps and other seafood. An interesting taste is obtained if you bake cakes together with the filling in the oven. In addition, they can be served and just like that, as bread, along with sauces.
