Polar Bear Day - what kind of holiday is it and how can it be celebrated?

Not many people know that Polar Bear Day is celebrated on February 27. In addition, it is believed that this international holiday is obliged to draw attention to the importance of these fauna representatives. On this day you can hear about the large-scale melting of ice and, as a consequence, the deterioration of living conditions for all inhabitants of the Arctic Circle.

What is the reason for the creation of the holiday?

As you know, this polar beast entered the process of evolution about 5,000,000,000 years ago. Initially, brown bears appeared , which later adapted to life in the Far North, having received a modified name and becoming a new variety of them.

Polar bears belong to the family of mammals of the order of predators, differing by their more stocky physique. In addition, these animals can stand on their hind legs and pass in this position a short distance. Strong jaws and tenacious paws allow "polar strongmen" to feed on even seals, although they excellently tear up a small fish.

According to approximate data of scientists, today there are about 25 000 individuals. At the same time, a decrease in the number of subpopulations was recorded, which is negatively reflected in the ecosystem of the Arctic. Perhaps this was the main reason why it was decided to create the International Polar Bear Day.

Note! Of the 19 subpopulations available to date, eight have declined in number. At the same time, only three species remained stable, and one also increased.

The Polar Bear Day began to be celebrated also because in 2008 it was entered in the Red Book as an animal that is under threat of extinction. So for him the status of "the most vulnerable species" was determined.

In addition, the melting of ice, which occurs as a result of global warming, also does not contribute to the reproduction of these animals. According to the same scientists, by 2050 polar bears can completely disappear. This conclusion was reached by residents of many countries, in particular Russia, the USA, Canada, Norway and Greenland.

Events dedicated to the holiday

  1. Cultural-mass work among pupils of schools and students, which usually begins with the gliding of snow figures of this beast and ends with stories about the main environmental problems. In addition, on Polar Bear Day, children's poems can be heard everywhere. Most of them are their own compositions.
  2. Creation of brigades of volunteers based on local population, monitoring the situation with polar bears. When animals are within sight, being a potential threat to people's lives, they start to scare away in many ways. It is forbidden to use products that can harm animals.
  3. Celebration of northern residents living in zoos on Polar Bear Day is held through various contests for children and adults. It can be research quests, creative workshops, art exhibitions, quizzes, as well as interactive excursions.
  4. Virtual projects conducted by well-known advertising agencies and social networks, which are focused on drawing attention to the problem of protecting polar bears.

Conclusion

On the Day of the Polar Bear, the symbol of the Arctic or the indicator of biological health of ecosystems of the same name, the problems of reducing its habitat are discussed. The consequence of this may be a decrease in its strength to a critical level, which is simply unacceptable.
