Mojito recipe: history of the drink + interesting facts + recipe

In Spain, "mojito" was called Creole sauce. We, under the name "Mojito", know a cocktail based on mint leaves and light rum. There are two types of this cocktail: non-alcoholic and low-alcohol. In addition, bartenders who asked the question "How to cook Mojito, which will hit customers on the spot?" Created a kind of "modification" of the drink: apple Mojito, as well as strawberry, blackberry and many other options that are in demand among fans of cocktails. But let us dwell, nevertheless, on the "classic" Mojito, which, they say, was loved by Ernest Hemingway himself - in this article you will see just such a Mojito recipe!

A bit of history ...

The recipe for the Mojito cocktail appeared in the capital of Cuba, Havana, in a small restaurant-cafe called Bodehita Del Medio, located near the Cathedral of Emperado. The cafe, which was founded by the Martinez family in 1942, still hosts its visitors all in the same room in an unchanged colonial style, located in the heart of the city. It stores photographs of famous personalities who visited the restaurant - such as Andrianis Rodriguez and Ernest Hemingway.

About how the name "Mojito" appeared there are many theories. The most common of them says that the word "mohito" came from the Spanish Mojo. Because in the Canary Islands and Cuba "mojito" is a sauce that includes greens, vegetable oil, lemon juice, pepper and garlic. Another theory claims that the word mojito changed from the word mohadito, which translates as "slightly moist".

Alcohol variant Mojito consists usually of 5 ingredients: peppermint (pepper is used, and not so widespread in Russia water), carbonated water, lime, cane sugar and rum. Mojito's characteristic combination of mint with refreshing citrus and rum made this drink one of the most popular in summer. In some hotels in Havana , Angostura is added to the mojito (the most popular bitter tincture in the world, whose strength is 48%).

In non-alcoholic Mojito rum is not added - it is replaced with water mixed with brown sugar. It is very important to use cane sugar, so that the cocktail does not lose its "zest".

Preparing Mojito at home

This drink is very popular because it differs in its original flavor and taste, and the mojito recipe can be fully realized at home. Of course, at home instead of lime, many use lemon, and instead of brown sugar - white, but then do not be surprised why the taste turned out to be completely different than in the bar. Rum for mojitos is not an obligatory element. If you do not add rum to the cocktail, then Mojito will be non-alcoholic, which is also very tasty.

So, for one serving of this cocktail you will need:

  • From 150 to 200 milliliters of soda (use Sprite or Schweppes in the classic version of the drink is not worth it);
  • 50 milliliters of rum (better Habana Club or Ron Varadero);
  • A small bundle of mint;
  • 1 lime;
  • 3 teaspoons cane brown sugar;
  • Ice to cool the cocktail.

  2. The resulting half is cut into two or three pieces.
  3. At the bottom of the glass we pour cane brown sugar.
  4. Squeeze out the juice from the lime. Crusts put on the bottom of the glass over the cane brown sugar.
