The beginning of acting career

In 1993 the boy was noticed by Mali Finn, a famous casting director, who was just looking for a young actor to star in the legal thriller "Client" Joel Schumacher. Brad's talent impressed the director, and he was officially confirmed for the role of Mark Swey. The shooting took place in the summer of 1993. Filmed on the basis of the best-selling book by John Grisham, "The Client" had a huge success at the box office, won the acclaim of critics and simple film fans.

In 1995, Brad Renfro played in the low-budget drama "Medication". The film tells how, as a result of the negligence of doctors, 11-year-old Dexter contracted AIDS in the hospital. Now the classmates are being mocked. Everything goes so far that Dexter can not even go to school. His only friend is 13-year-old Erik (Brad Renfro). The guys together are looking for a medicine that could help Dexter.

In the same year, Renfro played Huck in the movie "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" directed by Peter Hewitt. Brad's partners in the frame were Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Amy Wright. The film received mixed reviews of critics.

Brad Renfro appeared in the crime drama "Sleeping" Barry Levinson, playing Michael Sullivan in his teens. The film had a strong cast: the main roles were played by Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon and Brad Pitt. The picture "Sleeping" collected at the box office more than $ 160 million and even received a nomination for an Oscar.

"Smart student"

In 1996, work began on the thriller "Able apprentice", based on the eponymous story of Stephen King. Directed by Brian Singer, he selected over two hundred young actors for the role of Todd Bowden and chose the 14-year-old Brad Renfro. As Singer later said, Renfro was the brightest of all candidates.

Brad's character - 16-year-old schoolboy Todd Bowden - adores history, especially the period of World War II. After careful research Todd learns that a lonely old man living on the outskirts of the city is in fact a fascist criminal Kurt Düssander (Ian McKellen). Todd blackmails Dussander by telling everyone the truth about his past. For his silence, the teenager demands from the former Nazi colorful stories about torture in the death camps.

Brad Renfro became so involved in the role that, according to the recollections of the actor himself, during the filming, he changed, became withdrawn and gloomy, and his family feared for his mental health.

Despite the mixed reviews of critics, "Able Disciple" has acquired the status of a cult thriller and is rightly considered one of the best films in Renfro's filmography.

After the release of the picture "Able Disciple", in which Brad Renfro played, the films with his participation became very popular. Rolling success served as a reason for Brad's enthusiasm for alcohol and drugs.
