Hirudotherapy, reviews about which in most cases are the most positive, is nothing more than treatment with the help of leeches. It was applied even a few thousand years ago. Many today do not see in it anything wild and exotic.

What is a leech?

The leeches used for this procedure belong to the genus of annelids. They refer to the external bloodsucking parasites. In the whole world there are about four hundred varieties of leeches. Doctors also use only medical leeches and two of their subspecies. It is a question of apothecary and medical leeches.

The medical leech has five pairs of eyes, the whole mouth is covered with chitinous denticles. It can bite the skin up to a half centimeters. Over the time of blood, she can drink up to fifteen milliliters. For a single session, as a rule, five to seven leeches are used.

What is the effect of hirudotherapy?

Feedback is positive, but what effect should you expect from this procedure? In general, speaking of the effect, it is worth mentioning three factors: biological, mechanical, reflex. The point is that the leeches produce a mechanical effect on the bloodstream, place these creatures always so that the reflexogenic points are touched, the saliva enters the blood when it bites, which contains a lot of various kinds of active substances. These substances include the following:

- Hirudin: has anti-inflammatory, as well as analgesic, slows blood clotting, does not allow blood clots to appear;

- Destabilase: destroys the E-lysine that exists in the stabilized fibrin;

- Eglin: remove inflammation and prevent tissues from disintegrating with gout, rheumatoid arthritis and so on;

- Hyaluronidase: this enzyme promotes resorption of scars.

It should be noted that leeches have a beneficial effect on the entire body: the human immunity is strengthened, sleep normalizes, and appetite returns. Also note that body tissues are saturated with oxygen, and the blood flow is normalized.

When hirudotherapy is applied

Varicose, carbunculosis, cellulitis, eczema - with these diseases it will be very effective. In this list, you can also include various gynecological diseases, urological diseases and so on. Leeches are used for hemorrhoids, ischemia, thrombosis of arteries and veins, for otitis, paresis, neuritis and much more than that.

There are contraindications, but not so many. Do not resort to hirudotherapy, pregnant women, people with malignant tumors, as well as those who have problems with blood coagulability.
