Finlyandsky railway station in St. Petersburg. History and modernity

Finlyandsky railway station (Petersburg) is located on the Vyborg side in the immediate vicinity of the Neva. He is the only one in the city who has retained his original name. The metro station is located directly in the station building and allows passengers to quickly and comfortably reach any point of the metropolis. The foundry bridge and a modern traffic junction on the embankment provide good transport links with other parts of the city and the central highways.

History of origin and development

The construction of the railway from St. Petersburg to Finland began in 1862. The first building of the station was erected in 1870. The railway was built by Finnish masters. The features of the landscape and nature in the construction sites delayed the process and made it difficult and time-consuming. The Russian government has allocated a gold fund, which the Finns used to build the building.

Finlyandsky railway station first looked like a wooden one-story building with a small waiting room, a luggage compartment and a room for the royal family. Before him was a small square, the railway tracks came directly to the Neva. There was also a freight station. Later, the Finland Railway Station united the railways laid in Sestroretsk and Borisov Mane. The roads were reconstructed and raised above the ground in order not to interfere with traffic on the main highways of the city.

Finlyandsky railway station is famous for the performance of V.I. Lenin, which was held after his return from exile in 1917. He read a speech in front of the workers, in which he proclaimed the beginning of a new era. In honor of this historic event, a monument to Lenin was erected a few years later at the station. After the reconstruction, it moved to the area closer to the Neva.

The Finland Station played an enormous role during the war of 1941-1945. The first stage of the Road of Life began from him and continued to Lake Ladoga. It was from here that children, women, and old people were sent to evacuation, and they brought food and ammunition to support the defense. In memory of these events and the role played by the station in the struggle to save people, a commemorative kilometer post is set up near the platform. During the blockade and war the building was badly damaged and in some places destroyed.

After the lifting of the blockade, in the winter of 1943 it was Finland Railway Station that first took the train with food. Reconstruction of the building began in 1944.

Modern Finlyandsky Railway Station

The modern station is a complete and complete architectural ensemble, the main dominant of which is a sixteen-meter tower with mirrored windows and a 30-meter spire. In front of him is the square on which the monument to the leader is erected, zones for recreation are broken and the famous "Singing Fountains" are located.

The building after reconstruction has become a modern and multifunctional transport structure, which has everything necessary for passenger comfort. The ticket office of the Finland Station sells tickets for suburban trains and the "Allergo" train, which runs to Helsinki and back.
