Baton Rouge (Louisiana): getting to know the city

"Red stick" (literally translated the name of the locality) is a city in the US, which is located in the south in Louisiana. Its population is about 228 thousand people, and it is the capital of this state. Half of the population - African Americans, whites about 30%, Asians and Hispanics - no more than 2%. Unfortunately, the city has a high crime rate.

Historical reference

In ancient times, the modern territory of the city belonged to two Indian tribes: Houma and Bajugula, the boundaries of their possessions were shared by a river. It still flows through this settlement. When the French arrived here in the 17th century, they violated the peaceful way of life, wars and a "black" period began in the history of the city. Only in the first half of the XIX century the situation was somewhat stabilized, and this territory passed under US jurisdiction.

Location of the city

The main part of the city of Baton Rouge is located on one of the shores of the full-fledged Mississippi River and is protected from floods by numerous dams. Due to this, and also because it is located 14 meters above sea level, residents are not so afraid of floods. That is why there are so many tourists and those who want to move to a permanent place of residence.

The climate of the city

The climate in this area is humid subtropical, characterized by a short winter and a damp, very hot summer. Precipitation during the winter is rare. Throughout the whole year, hurricane winds dominate, which are familiar to residents living in the region. There is always the danger of suddenly appearing in the way of a tornado.

Industry

To date, Baton Rouge is a city with a lot of light and chemical industries. The state of Louisiana occupies a leading position in the processing of oil. One of the local factories in Baton Rouge is in second place in terms of production capacity among all existing similar enterprises in the country. The port located on the river can serve huge cargo ships, as well as large tankers.

sights

Of the city's attractions worth noting is the large university of Louisiana State University (LSU), in which about 30 thousand people receive education. The campus has 250 buildings, the average age of which is about 100 years. Almost the entire population in the city is a fan of the student basketball team LSU Tigers. Matches with her participation gather a large number of spectators. And the university stadium in 2015 at one of the games accommodated more than 102 thousand people.

Also in the city towers a building in 34 floors, which can be easily seen from a long distance because of the peculiarity of its illumination. Baton Rouge is the birthplace of science fiction writer Steve Perry.

Also, you can visit many famous museums. The city is famous for other monuments of antiquity, in particular destroyer "Kidd" and gunpowder cellars of the old arsenal.

The result

By itself, Baton Rouge (Louisiana) differs from other similar settlements by the fact that near it there are no satellite cities that are typical for American towns of this size and number of people living. Rapid growth of residents can be explained by several reasons. The main one is that people who inhabit the lower reaches of the river leave their places of origin and move to the described point, since the latter is less prone to natural disasters.

Baton Rouge is frequented by tourists who memorize this city forever. He brings to their lives amazing colors, a lot of emotions and joys. Visiting it once, I want to return here again and again. That's why all travelers who have ever visited this city, advise beginners to visit it.
