Counterpoint is a polyphony in music, simultaneous sounding and a harmonious combination of several independent melodies. Thanks to this, the work becomes more voluminous and beautiful.

There was a term from the Latin punctus contra punctum, which literally means "point versus point". Adapting to the musical theme - "note against note". That is, another melody is added to the main theme, which repeats the basic voice rhythmically, but is slightly modified.

Origin of musical counterpoint

Counterpoint as a kind of musical art is known since the 14th century and came to replace the treble. All subsequent musical epochs are characterized by this style. The first used counterpoint in the music of Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina. In his compositions, the composer used several voices so that, in addition to contrasting with each other, they had different melodic forms.

Further development of the counterpoint is traced in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. His work is characterized by a more developed polyphonic system.
