Compost Pit with the Mind

Every gardener will tell you that the compost pit is an indispensable assistant in the preparation of fertilizing for plants. It should be equipped at each site. Such a structure will help you with the mind to utilize kitchen waste, excess mowed grass, wood waste and ash. The compost hole will be an ideal breeding ground for earthworms, which will subsequently improve the soil structure in your beds.

With the proper organization of the site and the observance of certain rules, the appearance of the site and sanitary norms will not be violated. How to make a compost hole so that it is convenient to use? First of all, carefully consider the plan of your site and choose a suitable place. Ideal conditions will be penumbra, remoteness from residential buildings, both their own and neighbor's, the opportunity to go unhindered, to drive a garden cart.

If there is a large area, you can build several compost pits in different parts of the plot. They will be small and will be filled in during one season. As the compost ripens about 2-3 years, then, having built small holes, you can close them with covers. In this case, your compost hole can be built even near the fence with the neighbor's plot. After filling it correctly during the first year, and spending only a few digs in the next two, you will not bring much anxiety to neighbors.

Choosing the right place, we do the marking and shoot the turf to a depth of 15-20 centimeters. In each corner digging the pieces of cement pipes so that they rise above the level of the plot by 20 centimeters. We prepare the mortar from cement, crushed stone, sand and water. Fill ready-mixed concrete with the entire area and leave to freeze for several days. If you are building one pit, which you will divide into sections, then dig in pieces of pipes at all locations of vertical racks.

It must be taken into account that the diameter of the chosen pipe should be greater than the section of the bar prepared for the racks. Compost pit is made about one meter high. More massive buildings are inexpedient, since they complicate the process of digging waste. Saw the length of the bar. In the pipes fall asleep a layer of sand and small gravel. The end of the bar is treated with used engine oil or any water repellent solution that prevents decay. We put the posts into the pipes and fill all the cracks with small rubble.

The side walls can be assembled from any material. This may be the remains of boards, pieces of metal sheet or slate. You can lay them out of brick, natural stone or pour cement. Your choice will depend only on the availability of construction material or cash to purchase it. We will consider a variant of the walls from the boards.

The boardwalk compost is going very fast. We prepare the necessary number of boards, having preliminarily measured the distance between the vertical posts. We fix them with the help of nails or long self-tapping screws. The inner surface of the side and rear walls are covered with old linoleum, roofing material or pieces of used thick reinforced film to avoid contact of the compost with the tree.

Now it is necessary to make a wooden shield, which will serve as a front tilting lid. We slaughter it from the boards, leaving small gaps between them. To the bottom of the front posts of the compost heap we beat a narrow board. To it we fasten the prepared shield with the help of loops. To the top of the front wall we attach small hooks, and on the posts we have loops. With their help, our shield will be fixed to the racks and can be thrown away if necessary to take the finished compost.

Any compost pit in the country should be equipped with a removable cover. It can be made on the principle of such a shield and fixed with hinges on the back wall of the structure. To maintain it in an elevated state, we also make additional supports. They can serve as segments of a bar, thick branches or metal rods. The bottom of the support is installed on the front wall, and the top supports the lid in the open state.

For better maturation of compost, it must be closed. Therefore, if you are building a pit from several sections, you need to take care of a separate lid and front wall for each compartment.
