Which glue for polyethylene?

Polyethylene is one of the most popular and widely known materials. Not too expensive and, in general, unpretentious. Polyethylene is often used in the construction of greenhouses and greenhouses, for insulation and moisture insulation of various objects. At the time of the work many masters are faced with the need to glue this material. That's where the problems begin. The fact is that polyethylene is difficult to mix. But you can still attach it with glue. It is also possible to do this under the influence of high temperature. How to choose the right glue for polyethylene and what you need to pay attention to during work? The answers to these and other questions can be found below.

Properties of polyethylene

This wonderful material has so many interesting properties. Polyethylene is used for protection against moisture, is an excellent electrical insulator and is capable of absorbing one of the most dangerous types of radiation. It is almost completely resistant to chemicals. It is this last quality that sometimes turns from dignity into a flaw. How to bond such material and how to choose an adhesive for polyethylene?

It is interesting that gluing is not only a chemical process, but also an electrical process. The molecules of the substances to be joined are attracted to each other due to the difference in their charges. Therefore, it is rather difficult to find a substance that adheres well to polyethylene, and after drying it firmly holds together the bonded parts. Since the molecules of this material are quite "balanced", it is very difficult to glue it together with other elements. But still the chemical industry has created glue for gluing polyethylene. And not alone. Such an adhesive must have certain properties. Let's look at which ones.

Adhesive material requirements

If you decide to glue polyethylene or penophenol (its foamy variety) to a concrete or brick surface, the bonding adhesive should have a number of properties:

  • Stay resistant to the effects of atmospheric phenomena.
  • Do not destroy the fastening materials.
  • Have a high degree of hygroscopicity and adhesion.
  • Be resistant to temperature extremes.
  • Have antiseptic and fungistastic qualities.
  • Keep your properties for a long time.

Consumer feedback suggests that it is also worth paying attention to the environmental safety of the adhesive. This is especially important when using materials for interior decoration of premises. And if you decide to use polyethylene (penophenol) in the arrangement of a sauna or a bath, you need to pay extra attention to the heat resistance of the glue and its resistance to the action of hot water vapor.

How to choose glue?

If you do not know which polyethylene adhesive is right for you, ask the seller to look for one that contains methyl acrylate. This substance provides a rapid softening of polyethylene and its high-quality gluing. Also, the composition of the product may include chrome anhydride, various acids and xylene. The undeniable advantage of such glue is that when using it, you do not need additional surface treatment. But users say that he has a drawback. Such an adhesive for polyethylene is very toxic. Therefore, all work is better done outdoors. Well, or at least have to ensure a good ventilation of the room. The glue works best at a temperature of +35 ˚C. He is not afraid of moisture, but it is easily ignited.

Also in stores you can find funds for the connection of polymers. They are sold in the form of thick paste. They are usually supplied with a solvent. After joining these two components, the adhesive acquires the desired structure. As the solvent evaporates instantly, use the mixture quickly. So do not breed a lot at once.

But neoprene glue for polyethylene is better not to use. This compound is more suitable for joining rubber and rubberized parts, neoprene fabric, leather, felt, ceramics, metal in any combination. But for styropor, foam, polyethylene and plasticized PVC it is better not to use it. There will be no sense.

Acrylic adhesive with filler

If you do not know how to glue foamed polyethylene, try using a two-component formulation based on the same methyl acrylate. Alternatively, you can try the Easy-Mix PE-PP trade mark of the brand Weicon. It has excellent adhesion properties. It is used for gluing polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and other polymeric materials. When working with this glue you will have to hurry. It retains its properties in the open air for no more than three minutes.

Easy-Mix PE-PP contains a special additive consisting of microscopic glass beads. This filler does not allow glue to leave the bonding site. Therefore, the seam turns out to be strong enough. Such glue for foamed polyethylene should be applied only from the mixer of branded packaging. Work with him is best at a temperature of +22 ° C. Full freezing is provided not earlier than in 5-6 hours.

Epoxy adhesive

Of course, this is not a very suitable glue for gluing polyethylene. But if you could not find anything else, then you can try. Only have to pre-prepare the surface:

  1. The edges of the glued parts "clean" with a small emery cloth. Then carefully degrease them.
  2. Both parts are treated with a 20% solution of chromic anhydride or 25% solution of potassium dichromate. If such substances could not be found, you can use a strong solution of potassium permanganate.
  3. After the surface treatment, dry it.
  4. Dilute the glue according to the instructions. Apply to a surface to be glued a thin layer. Immediately dock the details.
  5. Stand for several hours, and preferably a day - until the joint is completely frozen.

Customer feedback indicates that phenol-formaldehyde resin has excellent adhesion to polyethylene. So if you carefully follow the instructions, you will succeed.

Glue polyethylene: instruction

As you can see, to glue polyethylene, you do not need any special knowledge. The order of work here is familiar:

  • Clean out;
  • Degrease;
  • To dry;
  • Spread with adhesive;
  • Fasten details;
  • To press;
  • Leave until completely dry.

At the same time, as with any other toxic substances, it is necessary to take care of the presence of protective glasses, gloves and a respirator.
