Barberry. Planting and grooming on the plot

Barberry is the largest genus of shrubs with a height of 30 cm to 3 m. The color of the leaves of this plant is diverse (like the genus Bérberis itself) - green, brown, red, mottled, yellow. Modern breeders managed to bring out decorative varieties that have leaves with a border around the edges and even peas. Tart-sour fruit of barberry is not very large - usually 7-10 mm, but there are varieties in which their size reaches 15 mm. Also they are painted in different colors - pink, red, purple, blue-black with a wax coating.

Particularly beautiful barberry in the spring, when the sun's rays are reflected in the dangling brushes of flowers.

Barberry. Planting and care. Choose a place

Shaded places for planting this sun-loving plant are categorically not suitable. The color of the bush is proportionally dependent on the sun's rays caressing its leaves. And such a plant will not bear fruit.

To the soil, barberry is unpretentious, it grows well both on chernozem and on subline. Excellent transfer of groundwater. It is fairly winter-hardy and drought-resistant.

Due to the spiky prickly stipules, the plant is widely used as a decorative hedge.

The seedlings are planted in the open ground in spring and autumn. Planting a single barberry bush, choose a place free from other plants and barriers in a diameter of 1.5-2 meters. Tightness and shadow will not allow the plant to form a proportional crown. To create a hedge on the running meter, 4 seedlings are placed.

The pit under the bush barberry digs quite large: the depth is 40-50 cm, the diameter is 50-60 cm. It is necessary to add humus or compost, mineral fertilizers for berry crops. After planting, the plant needs abundant watering.

Barberry. Planting and care. Fertilizer

The main process of plant care is a 2-3-fold top dressing during the summer period. The first of these is carried out before the beginning of flowering with an aqueous solution of "Agricola" fertilizer for berry and flowering crops: 10 liters of water per 1 tbsp. Spoon. The second one is nitrophous during the formation of berries: 2 tbsp. Spoons for 10 liters of water. Dry (third) top dressing should be made after harvesting: 50 g of potassium sulfate and 100 g of superphosphate after loosening the soil. Barberry only needs water charging (in autumn and early spring).

Barberry. Planting and care. Crown formation

Being a multi-barrel shrub, barberry is very good for creating decorative forms. Pruning is usually carried out in early spring, until the leaves have blossomed. Barberry is also cleansed for rejuvenation, by removing dry, broken, old and very dense branches.

Barberry. Planting and care. Protection from insects and diseases

The plant is harmed by barberry and apricot. When these insects are found on leaves, the bush must be treated with a solution of tobacco and laundry soap. After the collection of fruits recommended spraying with a solution of the drug "Iskra DE": 10 liters of water 10 g.

Fungal diseases bring much more harm to barberry than pests. Such a disease, like rust, which affects the entire bush at the same time, is considered the most dangerous. If you find round orange spots covered on the inside with pads, immediately treat the plant with Bordeaux fluid (1% solution), and after 7 days with Topaz.

When a disease called "powdery mildew" (plaque on leaves and shoots in the form of mealy plaque), the affected branches and leaves of barberry must be removed and burned.
