This was done by William Gilbert, having described in his scientific work, dating back to 1600, the results of his own research with amber. But to say that Gilbert invented electricity, of course, it is impossible. Actually, its priority in determining the properties of amber is not entirely correct, given that Thales in ancient Greece also rubbed it against wool. However, unlike the English scientist, who lived in the XV-XVI centuries, he did not draw a conclusion that the whole of our planet behaves like a giant magnet, and its bipolar nature. So the great researcher Gilbert took a giant step in the direction of energy research, which later became one of the main driving forces of progress, without which modern civilization can not even be imagined.

There is an ancient saying: to call correctly is to understand correctly. In a sense, the question of who invented electricity remains open, his research continues.

The fundamental discovery was the definition of Joseph Thomson's electron as a material carrier of electricity. This happened in 1879.

The expression "pay for light" is used quite often. In this sense, one of those who invented electricity was our compatriot Lodygin, who developed a much needed thing, like a light bulb, and sold the patent to Thomas Edison in 1906.
