What is LED backlighting? Backlight Types

Manufacturers of television products regularly introduce users to new technologies that improve the quality of image transmission. Approaches to combining TV screens and LED elements have long been mastered by the largest companies. Recently, the source of bright and soft glow is also moving to displays of mobile devices. Users of traditional lighting based on LEDs can also appreciate the advantages of such a solution, but, of course, LED lights in TVs are the most attractive. Moreover, it is supplemented by other high-tech inclusions used by the developers of this technique.

Illumination device

In the creation of modules for the implementation of the backlight, LED arrays are used, which can consist of white LEDs or multicolored elements, such as RGB. The board design for the matrix is specially designed to integrate a specific media model into the device. As a rule, on the left side of the board there are contact connectors, one of which provides power to the LED backlight, and others are designed to control its working settings. Also for LED modules , a special driver is used, the function of which is interfaced with the controller.

In the finished form, the LED strip is a series of miniature lamps that are connected in groups of 3 pieces. Of course, manufacturers do not recommend interfering with the device of such tapes, but if desired, you can physically shorten or, conversely, make a longer device. Also standard illumination of the LED screen provides the possibility of brightness adjustment, supports soft start and provides protection from voltage.

Classification of the lighting by type of installation

There are two ways to integrate LED backlighting - straight and front. The first configuration assumes that the array will be located behind the liquid crystal panel. The second option allows you to create very thin panels of screens and is called Edge-LED. In this case, the tapes are placed around the perimeter of the inside of the display. In this case, even distribution of LEDs is carried out using a separate panel that is located behind the liquid crystal display - usually this type of illumination of the LED screen is used in the development of mobile devices. Supporters of direct illumination point to a qualitative result of the glow, which is achieved due to more LEDs, as well as local dimming in order to reduce color divorce.

Application of LED backlight

An ordinary consumer can find this technology in the models of TVs Sony, LG and Samsung, as well as in the products of Kodak and Nokia. Of course, LEDs have become more widespread, but it is in the models of these manufacturers that there are qualitative changes towards improving the consumer qualities of this solution. One of the main tasks that the designers faced was the support of the working capacity of the screen with the optimal characteristics in conditions of direct exposure to the sun's rays. Also, LED-LED lighting has improved recently in terms of increasing contrast. If we talk about progress in the direction of the screen design, then there are noticeable abbreviations in the thickness of the panels, as well as compatibility with a large diagonal. But there are still unsolved problems. LEDs are not able to fully disclose their capabilities in the process of displaying information. However, this did not prevent the LED technology from displacing the CCFL lamps and successfully compete with the new generation of plasma screens.

Stereoscopic effects

Modules based on LEDs have many abilities to provide various effects. At this stage of technology development, manufacturers are actively using two stereoscopic solutions. The first involves an angular deflection of the radiation fluxes with the support of the diffraction effect. The user can perceive this effect during viewing with or without glasses, that is, in the holographic mode. The second effect involves the displacement of the light flux, which selects the illumination of the LED screen in the direction of the specified path in the liquid crystal layers. Use this technology can be combined with 2D and 3D formats after appropriate conversion or transcoding. However, with regard to the possibilities of combination with three-dimensional images, the LED backlighting does not go smoothly.

Compatible with 3D technology

It can not be said that the LED-backlit screens have serious problems interacting with the 3D format, but for optimal perception by the viewer of such a "picture" special glasses are required. One of the most promising areas of this development are stereo glasses. For example, engineers nVidia several years ago released shutter 3D glasses with liquid crystal glasses. To deflect the light streams, the LED backlight of the LCD screen provides the use of polarization filters. In this case, the glasses are performed without a special frame, in the form of a tape. The built-in lens consists of a wide array of translucent LED matrices that sense information from the control device.

Advantages of lighting

Compared with other options for backlighting, LEDs significantly improve the consumer quality of television screens. First of all, the immediate characteristics of the image are improved - this is expressed in increasing the contrast and color reproduction. The highest quality of color spectrum processing is provided by RGB-matrix. In addition, the illumination of the LED screen is characterized by reduced power consumption. And in some cases, a reduction in the consumption of electricity to 40% is achieved. Also worth noting the possibility of producing ultra-thin screens, which in this case have a small mass.

disadvantages

Users of televisions with LED lights present criticize them for the harmful effects of blue-violet radiation on the eyes. Also, the blueness is also observed in the "picture" itself, which distorts the natural color rendition. However, in the latest versions of high- resolution TVs, LED-backlit screen practically does not have such defects. But there are problems with brightness control, in which pulse-width modulation participates. During such settings, you can see the flicker of the screen.

Conclusion

To date, the segment of TV models with LED technology is in the making. The consumer still assesses the opportunities and dignity that can provide an innovative solution. It should be noted that the operational disadvantages of LED-backlit LEDs do not embarrass users as high cost. Many experts consider this factor as the main barrier for the wide popularization of technology. However, the prospects for LEDs still remain promising, as their value will decrease as demand increases. In parallel with this, other qualities of illumination are improved, which further increases the attractiveness of this proposal.
