Types of metal profiles and their purpose

All kinds of metal profiles, which are long products with different cross-sectional shapes, are produced by rolling a sheet.

The profile is an analog of a wooden or reinforced concrete beam. It is produced by cold or hot deformation of sheet metal. The complexity of manufacturing depends on the size and thickness of the walls. In general, welding is used, but there are also seamless products obtained by deformation of a circular pipe.

As a material of the profiles, different grades of steel and aluminum alloys are used. The width of the products is 10-180 mm, and the wall thickness is 1-12 mm.

Types of metal profiles are diverse, but the highest flexural strengths have products of square and rectangular cross-sections. Compared to hot-rolled section bars, the metal is consumed 20% less. At the same time, the surface area in contact with the atmosphere is less by 40%. This requires less corrosion protection.

The installation of profiles is done by electric welding, but it is possible to use clamps and other fasteners. Metal structures are of low weight and high strength.

In everyday life profiles of small sizes and simple shapes are used, and in the industry - the most diverse types of metal profiles (photo below).

A profile pipe made of steel is used for the erection of pavilions, shopping tents, sports grounds, supports for different purposes, billboards.

The minimum dimensions are suitable for the production of furniture, sports equipment, interior decoration. As load-bearing structures of private houses, profiles of 100x100x6 mm and above are used.

Aluminum products are used when it is necessary to create structures with low weight, ductility and high resistance to corrosion. Their transverse dimensions do not exceed 80 mm, and the angles can be rounded or straight. To increase strength and ductility, aluminum alloys are created with the addition of manganese, copper and magnesium.

2. Profiles for mounting drywall

Profiles are used to create building and finishing structures indoors. They are distinguished by cross-sectional shapes and sizes. Of these, frames are made of partitions, suspended ceilings, and also used for wall cladding. Mainly use a metal profile for gypsum board, the types of which are as follows:

  • Rack-mount (PS);
  • Guide (MN);
  • Ceiling (PP);
  • Angular (PU);
  • Bent (PG).

PS is a strip bent from a tin in the form of a channel. Easily deformed in the manufacture of profiles and can be manufactured manually, using simple machines. For rigidity, there are longitudinal corrugations.

PS is intended for manufacturing of vertical racks, partitions or facing of walls. It is mounted in pairs with a suitable type of guide profile. Their forms provide for a dense interface between themselves. Holes in the PS walls are intended for installation of electrical wiring.

ПН serves as horizontal guides with П-shaped form in which vertical racks are inserted. It also serves as a guide for the PP of the appropriate size.

PP is used for wall cladding and for the manufacture of a false ceiling frame. It is attached to the base by means of suspensions. Profiles for a false ceiling are convenient to buy complete with connectors. Then its installation is easy and fast.

The angle profile protects the outer corners of the plasterboard skin from damage. The sharp angle of the cross section allows the profile to fit snugly against the lining. It is made with perforation, so that the putty penetrates through the holes and firmly fastens the metal with the skin.

The PG is convex or concave and can have different radii of curvature. It serves to create arches and multi-level ceilings.

3. Accessories

All kinds of metal profiles for gypsum cardboard are attached using the following accessories.

  1. Two-level profile connector when they intersect each other. It is delivered unfolded, and it needs to be bent into the shape of the letter "P" before installation. Fixation is made by screws that are screwed into the perforation.
  2. One-level connector "crab" is intended for fixing profiles when crossing them crosswise. It snaps into profiles and at high loads it is still fixed with screws.
  3. Direct suspension is used to fix the posts to the walls, as well as when installing the ceiling.
  4. The profile extender is used when it needs to be extended.

Gypsum boards are attached to profiles with self-tapping screws for metal. Together with a press washer, they are suitable for all kinds of connections. The tips they have are piercing or drilling. To the walls the frame is fixed with screws with plastic dowels, and the suspension to the ceiling - an anchor-wedge or a ceiling dowel.

Types of metal profile for the roof

The rafter system of the house is made of steel in order to reduce loads, increase the service life and fire safety.

Types of metal profiles for load-bearing structures include bent and hot-rolled, but the weight and consumption of the latter are greater (channel, beam, corner). The cladding is also made of steel. In this case, all metal is protected from corrosion by zinc or other anticorrosion coating.

Their price is higher than that of wooden similar structures. But they can be cheaper than a bar with the same technical characteristics. Sometimes mixed structures of wood and metal are used. It should be noted that the condensate on the metal can cause waterlogging and rotting of the wood in contact with it. In addition, the metal is a bridge of cold, and the roof should be properly insulated.

Rafters with trusses are fixed to the walls with anchor bolts and fixed for a time in an upright position. Then the hat profile is laid across, and the cover is fastened to it.

Thermoprofile

Types of metal profiles include a thermoprofile, similar to the usual for drywall. The only difference is that it is made perforation, designed to reduce heat loss through the cold bridges. The holes are staggered. Cutting of the sheet allows to extend heat flows through the metal, which significantly reduces heat loss, and also improves the vibration and sound insulation characteristics of the material compared to a tree of the same size. From the thermo profile, the outer beams of the house are erected, and also the facade is cladded under the insulation and the thermal contours under the roof.
