The temples of Vologda are known for their ancient architecture and picturesque icons. For some of them, read the article below.

The Church of St. Nicholas on Glinka (Vologda)

Today the exact date of building the church is unknown. It is believed that it was built around the end of the XV century. The church of St. Nicholas on Glinka is located not far from the source of the Zolotukhi River, dug out by the order of Tsar Ivan IV. In those days, Zolotukha served as a moat of the Vologda Kremlin from the southeast. In order to raise the water level, the king ordered to dig another channel (Kopanku). When digging these channels, a large amount of clay was formed. Therefore, they called the temple before the "Glinka" (like other churches in Vologda, the church of St. Nicholas changed its name).

In 1676 the wooden church was rebuilt. Now it becomes stone, and they build it from clay bricks, extracted during the digging of the Zolotukhi River. The found in the archaeological excavations of clay kilns confirm this fact.

The church of St. Nicholas on Glinka, like many ancient temples of Vologda, was rebuilt several times, so its original appearance was greatly altered.

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin on the Goat

The time of building a wooden church on Kozlen is unknown, but the very first written mention of it is dated back to 1612. Sloboda, where the church was built, was called Kozlenskaya (now this name is worn by one of the streets of the city).

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin on Kozlene (Vologda) has a typical architecture for the beginning of the 17th century. The main compositional parts here are a two-lighted quadrangular with an octagon placed on it and a dome roof with one head.

Very interesting wall painting of the church, dating back to the beginning of the XVIII century. The dome of the building, its walls and vaults are covered with paintings according to the tradition of Yaroslavl-Kostroma frescoes. Completed painting by Fedor Fedorov. Updated in the XIX century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Alexeyev's frescoes appear here. They are interesting in that they represent the last stage of the art of murals in Russia.

Temples of Vologda: Temple of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky

The temple, located on the right bank of the Vologda River near the cathedral, was erected in 1554. The date of the construction of the temple from the stone is not exactly known, but judging by the architectural details, the reconstruction took place in the XVIII century.

In 1869, the city was visited by Tsar Alexander II and the church was renamed the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky.

The complex fate of the building begins in 1924, when it is closed. During the war there is a military unit, after the war - Glavkinoprokat. Until 1993, the building housed a rental of ski equipment, and only in 1997 the temple management moved to the religious community, which opens it for the parishioners again.

The temples of the Vologda land are very interesting with their architecture, icons and frescoes. Being in Vologda, it is absolutely necessary to visit some of them.
