Succulent is a plant? Home succulents

Succulent is a great way to decorate the interior. These plants are suitable even for rooms with poor lighting. Dry air to them, too, is not terrible. Their endurance allows the flower to develop at low temperatures, but the climate optimal for succulents is room temperature and high humidity. That is why plants are often placed near the aquarium or in bathrooms with natural light.

What are succulents?

Succulents are plants that can store moisture in leaves and stems. They grow on rocks, in sands, in tropical and subtropical forests. Plants are enduring and are able to tolerate large temperature fluctuations, both seasonal and daily. Much in common with cacti have succulents. Care, cultivation and reproduction at them are identical. A distinctive feature of the family of cacti is the presence of the kidneys, from which the spines appear.

Some domestic succulents accumulate moisture throughout the body, others - only in the stem or in the leaves. Such plants can be represented in the form of trees, bushes, lianas and so on. That is why it becomes difficult to determine which group the plant belongs to.

How to care?

The best place for succulents, as well as for cacti, is the window facing south. Plants should be in the sun for at least 4 hours a day. Each plant from the succulent group prefers its own degree of dryness. Flowers come from the jungle like regular watering, while agave, like cacti, can stand for weeks without water and feel good.

Succulent is a plant that blends perfectly with a cactus in one pot. Florists recommend to lay a multicolored pebble or drainage on top of the soil. This decoration, in combination with a clay pot, decorates the windowsill with dignity.

Succulents grow slowly enough, so they need less nitrogen than other houseplants. If there is no opportunity to purchase a special fertilizer for cacti, it can be replaced with a solution of phosphorus fertilizer with a low nitrogen content. Plants need to be fertilized only during a period of active growth.

Watering

The main error of the florists is the abundant winter watering. Succulent is a plant that is sufficiently sprayed during the winter. If it seems to you that the plant does not have enough moisture, pay attention to its leaves. With a lack of water, the leaves start to wrinkle, but do not rush to sound the alarm, the plant is quickly restored by watering.

In spring and summer succulents and cacti begin the phase of active growth. At this time, the plant needs the most water. Water it often, but slightly. Otherwise, the root system will rot.

Important Tips

Sooner or later, any florist faces a problem, the solution of which does not come to mind. For this purpose, a list of the most common plant problems and their solutions has been compiled. For example:

  • The flower turns black at the root. The cause of the disease is the root rot, which now extends to the stem. Most likely, this is due to excessive watering, but there are cases when poor aeration of soil becomes the fault. To save the plant, scrape off the blackening with a serrated knife, wait for the callus to appear, and start watering the plant again. In more neglected cases, the plant is best transplanted.
  • Stems and leaves wrinkled and listless . Problem in insufficient watering. Succulent is a plant that can survive without water for long, but do not abuse it. To bring the flower back to normal, pour it and sprinkle the adrenal part. The next day, pour a little more. Then wait three days and again pour a little. After such a procedure, the plant will return the former form.
  • There were brown or gray spots. The plant was burned. Move the succulent to a shady place and shorten the time of its stay under the sun's rays.
  • Dark cork spots. The reason is a fungus. To restore the plant, reduce watering, provide the root system with air.

Insects on the stem. Most likely, your flower attacked aphids. Remove the damaged stems and treat the plant with an insecticide solution.
