Definitions

In Russia, the berries, which are referred to worldwide as pineapple ( Fragaria ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier), are called strawberries, sometimes even "victoria" (from the first variety imported from England).

The plant was bred by cross-fertilization of Chilean wild strawberries - Fragária chiloensis (brought from Chile by the French traveler Amédé François Fresée in 1714) and Virginia strawberries - Fragária virginiana (introduced in Europe in 1623, planted in Paris). The famous French botanist Antoine Nicolas Duchesne, who received the Chilean strawberry, dropped it just next to the Virginia strawberry, and after a while received a new plant with the qualities inherent in two progenitors: winter hardiness (from the Virginia) and large-fruited (from Chilean).

Historically used in Russia, the name of strawberries has long been associated with all gardeners exclusively with strawberry pineapple ( Fragaria ananassa Duchesne ex Rozier), in England it is called Strawberry, in France - Fraise.

Strawberry "Bogota": a description of the variety

Comments gardeners-lovers about the cultivation of this plant vary, which is easily explained by the characteristics of the variety. Strawberry "Bogota" freezes even in relatively warm winters in the conditions of the Non-Black Earth Region. The state variety is recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus region.

The height of the bushes can be up to thirty centimeters, although the plants are rather compact. When cultivating, it should be borne in mind that dense, fairly heavy berries can hang and lie, so the compactness of the bush in this case does not give grounds for a close planting. Plants should be placed in a row at a distance of at least thirty centimeters from each other, and even more (in the case of well-fertilized moist soils). The distance between the rows should not be less than sixty centimeters. For amateur farms, you can recommend a chess method of planting: a cage measuring 40x40 centimeters, a bush in the center.

Large, rounded leaves of strawberry "Bogota" at a slight angle are inclined to the central stalk. Bright-green wrinkled leaves feel dense and leathery to the touch. Leaflets of the leaves are covered with soft hairs. Elastic and thick pedicels rarely grow above the leaves, remaining almost on par with the bush.

Berry strawberries: description

Red fruits, called berries, in strawberries ( pineapple strawberry ) is nothing more than an overgrown colander. And the fruits, - small brown nuts, - are located on the surface of the berries themselves.

With good, steadily hot weather and an adjusted irrigation system, it is the berries that attract the "bogota" in strawberries. Comments of gardeners draw a colorful picture of taste, aroma and juiciness of berries. When cut, the color of the strawberry is pink almost to the very core. The aroma is sturdy strawberry, pronounced. The taste is tenderly sweet, with a light sour, the aftertaste is long, not cloying.

The shape of the fetus is a comb-shaped truncated cone in the largest fruits, and in the case of smaller berries, a slightly truncated cone.

Too different sizes of fruits distinguish berries strawberries "Bogota". The description of the variety would be incomplete without mentioning this feature. Weight of berries on average from 13.5 to 15 grams, large specimens can reach 100-120 grams. When harvesting, it is this feature (too different sizes) that does not allow berries to be laid for normal transportation, although the fruits have very good elasticity and, consequently, keeping quality.

Strawberry "Bogota" is recommended for fresh consumption.

Features of cultivation and care

Strawberry "Bogota" is one of the most late varieties. This makes it possible for the berry to ripen in favorable hot conditions (actually, it was conceived during breeding). But dry weather can easily affect the size and juiciness of the fetus. Well-watered irrigation is the main feature of cultivating strawberry variety "Bogota". Comments of gardeners leave no doubt about the need to meet the deadlines and volumes of irrigation.

Care for the strawberry variety "Bogota" is not more difficult than for everyone else. Loosening, weeding from weeds, fertilizing and mulching (if necessary) before the beginning of fruiting, loosening and pruning (not breaking off) mustaches - during fruiting, fertilizing, loosening, removing damaged (old) shoots - until wintering.

Preparing for winter

In conditions of warm winters of the North Caucasus region, shelter is not required for the strawberry "Bogota". When growing in the middle zone of the Russian Federation, when the temperature can drop for a long period of less than twenty-five degrees with a low snow cover, the plant needs a shelter. Close the bushes before wintering is best done with lapnika or cut plants, but shelter is only necessary after the onset of a steady (but small - to minus one or two degrees) drop in temperature below zero. If you close the bushes in advance, the strawberry will begin to become wet and then rot. But even the shelter can not guarantee against freezing. A fairly good result is planting with subsequent shelter in polycarbonate greenhouses, than usual, and owners of small plots enjoy a large harvest of strawberry "Bogota" (berries large and heavy) almost a month earlier than from those grown under natural conditions without shelter.

How to plant strawberries: general recommendations

A good harvest of strawberry "Bogota" will give in the presence of the sun not less than eight hours a day. Grow it should be in well-lit places, forming ridges, ridges, furrows. If the land allocated for the berry is dry, you can form furrows without lifting them high above the ground. If the soil is well kept by moisture or close to groundwater, it is possible to form high beds with boards from boards or ridges.

If there is no place on the site, you can try to grow strawberries "Bogota" on a vertical ladder or pyramid.

For mulching, cut hay, mowed grass not more than ten centimeters high, pine litter, nonwoven material, and darker film are ideal. The layer of mulch restrains the evaporation of moisture, creates a microclimate that maintains moisture and creates ideal conditions for plant nutrition.

Requirements for Soils and Fertilizers

Strawberry berries can not be created on lands preceded by tomatoes and potatoes - it is impossible to use such soil for four years.

From this point of view, as a mulch, you can not use sawdust, as they change the acidity of the soil, which categorically does not tolerate the strawberry "Bogota", however, like all other varieties.

Manure for strawberries is considered to be the best fertilizer, but it can be introduced only in early spring, when the plant is practically asleep.

Categorically, it is not possible to add mineral fertilizers before landing the mustache in August.
