The first berry of summer. How to propagate honeysuckle edible

The gardeners are steadily growing in interest to a useful blue berry, which ripens earlier strawberries, is easy to care for and is not afraid of winter frost and spring frosts.

Honeysuckle edible, settling in the garden, remains there forever. It adapts easily, the range of its growth - from the slopes of the Caucasus to snowy Siberia and the Far East. Loves raw slopes, peat bogs, grows well along the marshes. With dryness, too, is reconciled, but the taste qualities of berries from this become worse.

How to propagate honeysuckle

Edible sweet and sour berries can be propagated both in seeds and vegetatively. Seed dilution is rarely used, mainly for breeding new varieties, as young shoots develop very slowly and take a long time to fruition. Varietal qualities are transmitted only with vegetative reproduction: by dividing the bush, layers, lignified and green cuttings.

Reproduction by layers

The easiest and most reliable way of how to multiply the edible honeysuckle, if there is already a bush on the site, is the cuttings. With one adult mother plant, you can get more than ten seedlings, and without much difficulty. As soon as the snow comes down, in the radial direction from the bush, you need to make grooves, and then carefully place strong, well-ripened shoots in them. Then they fall asleep and pinned to the ground. Their ends are plucked and tied vertically to the wooden pegs. Care consists in timely watering, top dressing and removal of weeds. The shoots for the summer are formed lateral roots, and by autumn they are ready to transplant to a permanent place.

How to propagate honeysuckle by cuttings

Saplings of honeysuckle develop very slowly: annual ones barely grow to 10 cm, and three-year-olds hardly reach half a meter by the end of vegetation. The normal height of the bush is only 6-8 years. Nurseries do not have time to meet the growing demand, so it makes sense to do breeding yourself.

How to propagate honeysuckle edible green cuttings:

  1. Prepare the ground in advance and take care of the film shelter.
  2. Use fresh cuttings.

Time for reproduction - the end of May - the middle of June. The site is chosen sunny, without shading, the land for planting should be loose, fertile.

The material can be purchased in the nursery, or borrow from neighbors. For this, shoots from fruiting shrubs, 10 cm long with two internodes, are taken. The lower leaves are removed, the upper leaves are shortened. Do not allow the cuttings to dry out, after cutting, they must be placed in a plastic bag. Before planting, it is possible to process the ends with a root stimulant. Cuttings when planting densely squeeze the soil and abundantly watered. Then cover with a film frame. If the plants are small, they can be covered with glass or plastic caps. Irrigation should be frequent - no less than two days later. Three weeks later the buds begin to grow. From this moment, the plants begin to ventilate, and after a few days the shelter is removed.

On a permanent place the plants are planted in autumn. Spring transplantation is undesirable, since the honeysuckle buds begin to grow very early.

Seedbed method

The germination of honeysuckle seeds persists up to 3 years, and some gardeners try to grow seedlings. Those who are interested in how to propagate honeysuckle by edible seeds, should know that the seed material needs stratification. Otherwise, there will be no sprouting.

Sowing is carried out in March - in pots. Before this, the seeds are soaked for a day in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Seedlings appear after 2 weeks. They grow very slowly, so it is important to keep the earth clean from weeds.

Decorative honeysuckle

Sweet honeysuckle honeysuckle is also a fairly common plant in our gardens. A delicate aroma, spectacular elliptical leaves, flowers of the original form and bright berries allow it to maintain its decorative throughout the season. The methods are the same: layers, seeds and cuttings. Cuttings are taken in winter, spring or summer. Green cuttings are cut in July, and planted similarly to edible varieties. Preliminary treatment with stimulants increases the percentage of rooting.

The plant is photophilous and demanding for moisture and soil composition. Young shoots freeze, for the winter it is desirable to mulch them with peat.
