"Steppe": a summary. The Steppe, Chekhov

In 1888 Chekhov's story "The Steppe" was written. A summary of it will be given in this article. In the work a new approach to the narrative is indicated: a part of the pictures the reader sees through the perception of reality as the main character - Yegorushka. They are supplemented by author's comments, helping to reveal the peculiarity of the surrounding world and to understand the soul of ordinary people.

Chapter 1. The beginning of the path

Early July morning. A dilapidated carriage drove out of the district town, which was run by the young coachman Deniska. Three passengers sat in it: the rector of the church, Father Christopher, the merchant Ivan Ivanovich Kuzmichev and his nine-year-old nephew Yegorushka. The adults went to sell wool, and the boy was taken to the gymnasium.

So begins Chekhov "Steppe". The summary of the story continues with a description of the feelings of Yegorushka. He was left alone for the first time and now, looking around, he recalled how he went to church at Easter. And also how my grandmother died. And suddenly he cried with pity for himself. Uncle and father Christopher spoke of the benefits of teaching. And before the boy's eyes, the steppe already seemed infinite (it is not possible to describe it in detail ). Chekhov notes that after the evaporation of life-giving dew, everything around fell from the heat. Egorushka tired and looked indifferently at the monotonous picture. The mowers and women on the field, the pack of dogs and the Varlamov sheep were left behind. A windmill appeared ahead, which did not disappear from sight.

Chapter 2. Rest

By noon they stopped by the stream. Settled under the baggage, ate baked eggs and pies. This continues Chekhov's story "Steppe". The summary introduces the reader to the life of Christopher's father. He spoke in several languages from childhood, had knowledge in many sciences, dreamed of studying in Kiev. But the parents did not bless this decision, and the young man remained at the church, where his whole life passed. Now Father Christopher did not regret anything, because he did not violate his father's will, although he was sure that it was necessary to study. He inspired this idea to Egorushka. Then they talked about wool and some kind of Varlamov.

Having a snack, the adults went to bed. The boy went to the village, played with the awakened Deniska, who in his heart was still a child. At last we set out on our journey, and until evening, before the eyes of Yegorushka, the same pictures flashed before the eyes of the same morning.

Chapter 3. At the Inn

Already at dusk they stopped at an elderly Jew. Radushi Moses Moiseich had no limits, but the guests did not dare to spend the night: it was necessary to find the mysterious Varlamov. The merchant and the holy father counted the money - Egorushka had never seen such a heap. Drunk tea. We talked with the Jew about living. Sleepy Yegorushka owners gave a carrot - they all lamented that now there is nobody to take care of the boy.

So you can mark the topic of Chapter 3 and its summary. "Steppe" Chekhov continues the description of the appearance of the Jew known in the countess Countess Dranitskaya, who also hoped to see Varlamov.

Chapter 4. Meeting with the train

Half-asleep Yegorushka sat down next to Deniska. He was still thinking about Varlamov, who was very rich and elusive, and a beautiful countess. He was lulled into the smells and sounds of the steppe, submerged in darkness. The voice of the sleeping boy was awakened. This Ivan Ivanovich asked the peasants who accompanied the convoy they had caught up with about Varlamov. Then Yegorushka was transplanted to a large bale with wool, and he, happy that he could lie down comfortably, fell asleep. Uncle asked the peasants not to offend his nephew and promised to take him as soon as he visited the milk. This is the beginning of a new chapter and its brief content.

Steppe Chekhov describes in his story often. But in the morning Yegorushka was more interested in the convoy and the people with whom he was traveling further. Only twelve underwater and five men accompanying them. Near the cart on which the boy was lying, old Pantelei was walking, who spoke and bounced as if frozen.

When they stopped at the well, Yegorushka saw the other travelers. Strong, confident Dymov, who killed on the road horror and caused dissatisfaction with the other drivers. Emelian, a former singer, now lost his voice. Black-bearded Kiryukhu of the near mind. Surprisingly sharp-sighted Vasya, who could see and hear what others could not.

Chapter 5. On the River

It became unbearably hot. We stopped at the river. The drivers frolicked in the water. When they caught the cancer, they ran to the village for ravings and caught fish, from which they cooked porridge. Egorushke, also decided to swim, spoiled the mood of Dymov. The man grabbed his leg and nearly drowned him. After that, the boy sat on the shore and watched the others.

What else does Chekhov write in his novel? The "steppe", the brief content of which you read, also includes a description of the mass in the village church, where Yegorushka came out of boredom, and met with the shopkeeper who poured him tea.

Returning to the river, the hero, along with everyone ate porridge and listened to the stories of the peasants about their former life, which was better than the present.

Chapter 6. By the fire

Towards evening we went on the road. Egorushka watched the stars appear in the sky, and he thought about his grandmother. It seemed to him that he himself would never die. Pantelei continued his endless story.

By midnight a fire was kindled. While they were cooking porridge, they started talking about a merchant killed near this place. Subject continued Pantelei, who, according to his words, once he almost became a victim of robbers. And although there was a lot of fiction in the story, Yegorushka listened to him with bated breath.

Later, a stranger approached the fire. His young wife went to her mother, and he, in her expectation, did not know where to put herself. The happy look of the man caused all the sadness. His bosom again was seized with boredom, and he climbed onto his cart.

Waking up, the boy finally saw Varlamov, whom everyone was looking for in the steppe. He was a short man on an ugly horse. After talking with the drivers and scolding his horse, he raced off along the road. These were two days from Yegorushka's new life. However, this does not end with a brief summary. The "steppe" of Chekhov continues the seventh chapter.

Chapter 7. Thunderstorm

At night we were sitting by the fire again. The conversation did not work out. In addition, Dymov provoked a quarrel with Emelian, and Yegorushka, who at first felt dislike for the first of them, rose to defend the songwriter. The frustrated boy climbed onto the bale and burst into tears, dreaming to be home.

Dahw turned black, it became stuffy. Soon a violent thunderstorm broke out. The train moved forward, and Yegorushka was sitting on bales, experiencing incredible fear. It seemed to him that a giant was approaching from behind. The hero was all wet and frozen. And from the rumbling thunder and the shining lightning it was impossible to hide. At first Yegorushka was baptized and called Pantelei. Then he was assured by the confidence that the storm would never end, and he would be killed. This was the most terrible moment in the life of the boy, as the plot of the story and its short content show.

"Steppe" AP Chekhov continues the description of the hero's illness. Already in the village hut, he still could not get warm and raved. And early in the morning we went on the road again. Yegorushka, with a confused consciousness, was shivering from the cold on her flight.

Chapter 8. The End of the Path

Finally we drove into a large courtyard, and the boy heard Denis's voice. Father Christopher rastened the sick Egoryushka, then covered it with a blanket and a sheepskin coat. From conversation of adults the boy has understood, that the transaction with a wool has gone right.

The next morning the hero felt healthy. And after breakfast they found N. Toskunov, a friend of her mother. Ivan Ivanych agreed with her about living, arranged a nephew to go to the gymnasium and the very next day, along with Father Christopher and Deniska, went home. Yegorushka greeted with longing and tears life in a strange house.

So ends AP Chekhov "The Steppe". The summary of the chapters allowed us to convey only the key points of the story.
