The Botanical Garden of Almaty is located in the largest city of Kazakhstan, at the foot of the Tien Shan. Description

Botanical Garden of Almaty, photo of which amazes with an abundance of rare plants, exists since 1932. Located in the foothills at altitudes of 850-900 meters, is a magnificent range for research of flora, characteristic of various ecosystems of the Earth.

After the collapse of the USSR, the garden experienced a period of decline. Its area in the 90s declined from 108 to 103.6 hectares due to the withdrawal of part of the territory for elite buildings. Today the Botanical Garden of Almaty is protected by the state.

Collections of open-ground flower plants

The Botanical Garden of Almaty has a rich collection of open ground plants. Here grow shade-tolerant perennials (over 150 taxa), belonging to 65 genera and 22 families. Variety variety is significant: 6 varieties of geicher, 25 varieties of astilbe, 3 varieties of vinca small and others. 14 types of ornamental foliage plants, 4 types of hellebore, 3 kinds of hills, hoods, greenschuk, mottled form and others were introduced.

Groundcover plants read 25 species. There are well-known species: small periwinkle, creeper, creeping phlox. Rare species are represented by bells, saxifrage, New Zealand azen and others. In the collection of light-loving perennials - asters, geleniums, lupins, irises, daylilies, phloxes - there are only 50 species.

Collections of flowers and ornamental plants of closed ground

This botanical garden Almaty has been developing this collection since the 1940s. The main greenhouse-greenhouse group acquired a modern type in the late 60's, after the construction of a stock greenhouse.

Now the fund has about 600 species, representing 370 genera and 75 families. Greenhouse collection plants are grouped according to the principle of ecological and morphological similarity, occupying five exposures:

New types of callas surprise visitors with the quaintness of coloring covered with red and yellow shades.

Among the replenished collection of plants in the 2000s are:

  • The Basel family is Malabar spinach (white basalt).
  • The family of Mimozovs is mimosa mimosa, yellow neptunium.
  • The family of Tsezalpinovs is Indian tamarind.

Collection of medicinal plants

Originally incorporated in the late 1950s, the modern look acquired in 1981. In recent years, the USSR medicinal plantings numbered 300 species, but the uncertainty of the status of the botanical garden at the dawn of the formation of Kazakhstan led to a reduction in floristic diversity to 130 species. Today, the financing of the park has increased, this allowed to diversify the collection.

Collector's Fund Alpinaria

There is a collection since 1986. Since the beginning of the 2000s it has been reconstructed and significantly expanded. For today the garden has 230 kinds of alpine flora:

  • Herbaceous plants represent 188 species, belonging to 86 genera.
  • Wood and shrub plantations number 42 species, belonging to 21 genera.

30 species that grow in the exposition are very rare.

The garden is a kind of oasis of greenery, surrounded by urban neighborhoods. Visitors note the tranquility, sincerity, silence of this place. In the park there are especially many coniferous trees that fill the air with curative phytoncides. For walks there are paved paths, benches, gazebos. Picturesque look various bridges. Wooded territory was chosen by squirrels and birds.

Among the minuses, visitors note the lack of activity of the Almaty botanical garden, the inadequacy of recreation areas, shops. The greenhouse needs renovation and renewal of the species fund. Increased funding and conservation status should contribute to the revival of the main botanical garden of Kazakhstan.

The garden is located on the street Timiryazev, 36. The entrance is paid, about 350 tenge (children's ticket - 100 tenge). The order of the excursion program is possible. In the greenhouse excursions are held after an appointment. Working hours: from 10 am to 7 pm without days off.
