Sights of Rybinsk: temples, monuments and museums

The charming town of Rybinsk is located 90 km from Yaroslavl, at the confluence of the Sheksna and Volga rivers. This settlement is known as one of the points of the route "Golden Ring" and the former capital of burlacies. Settlements in the territory of modern Rybinsk are known since 1071. In the annals of the memory of two villages of those times - Rybansk and Ust-Sheksna. However, the sights of Rybinsk are the best to tell about their centuries-old and eventful history.

Former glory

About the settlement of Ust-Sheksni was mentioned in the 16th century. When Ivan III made a will, he called her Fish Sloboda. The inhabitants of this village engaged in fishing and then traded fish with neighboring lands. After St. Petersburg was founded, and the Vyshnevolotsky water system was opened, the settlement became a major shopping center. Through this settlement all the goods passed through the Volga to the north.

The center of barge haulers

The main occupation in the city was grain trade. The goods were transported by barge haulers who came to the settlement to work. In 1777 Rybnaya Sloboda received the status of the city and the name Rybinsk. From the beginning of the 19th century, after the discovery of the Tikhvin and Mariinsky water systems, the city became the main junction that connected Petersburg with the Volga-Caspian basin. At the same time, a large number of burlaks concentrated there, which exceeded the urban population in number. They worked on water systems between Rybinsk, Astrakhan and St. Petersburg. True, soon their work was replaced by steamers. The significance of the city increased even more after 1947, when the Rybinsk Reservoir and the Rybinsk hydroelectric complex were built.

Temples of Rybinsk

The most famous building of the city is the Transfiguration Cathedral. It was erected in the 19th century and became the main temple of Rybinsk. Since that time only the bell tower of the church, which was built in 1804, has been preserved. The interior of this cathedral was destroyed in the early 20th century. Nevertheless, even from this the construction did not lose its greatness. The Transfiguration Cathedral was built by St. Petersburg architects, headed by A. Melnikov. It is rumored that during its construction an unrealized project of St. Isaac's Cathedral was used, which was to be founded in St. Petersburg.

Now the Transfiguration Cathedral is perceived as an integral architectural ensemble. True, the bell tower of the church was erected for 50 years before the construction of the temple. It combines the elegant restraint of classicism, soft baroque painting. Later the cathedral and bell tower were connected by a covered gallery.

On the territory of the ancient St. George cemetery is the church of the Great Martyr George. This wooden church was erected in place of a small wooden church in 1790.

In Rybinsk it is also worth seeing the temple of the Presentation of the Lord. It was built in the 19th century and is made in Byzantine style.

Almost all expositions are placed in the premises of the New Exchange. The interior design resembles the old Russian chambers. Here are stored more than 9000 paintings of domestic and foreign artists, weapons, old books, clothes, furniture. Not far from Rybinsk is the village of Makarovo. Near the small cemetery of this village is the church of Alexander Nevsky (early 20th century). A little south of the city, downstream of the Volga, is the village of Pesochnoe. Here operates a porcelain factory, which was founded in 1884 by merchant Nikitin. At the moment, it produces different products from porcelain, including unique copyright items.

Charming river

Sights of Rybinsk have their own unique and unique charm. It is also worth a stroll along the Volga embankment, on which a large number of different sculptures are located. On the left bank of the river, on a high hill, there is a charming gazebo, which can be seen from many points of the city. In 1918 in this place was located the Mihalkovs' estate. Nearby there is a unique manor park, where limes grow. It is one of the oldest green areas of the city and a masterpiece of landscape art.

Rybinskaya HPP

Since we have already started talking about the Volga, it is impossible not to mention the Rybinsk hydroelectric power station. It began to cost in 1936. Installation work here did not stop to conduct even during the raids of German aviation. The first hydroelectric power plant was delivered in 1941. This energy was sent to Moscow, which was already approaching the enemy. In connection with this, 40 employees of the power plant received medals "For the defense of Moscow." The second turbine was launched in January 1942. The third one was launched after the war, the fourth one began operating in 1948, the fifth one in 1949, and the last in 1950. The architects Morozov and Movchan worked on the structure. Now there are 6 turbines.

The Volga Bridge

Another beautiful building of the city is the Volga Bridge. It began to be erected in 1940. According to the idea, it was designed in such a way that the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral would have to be liquidated, but the war that was started destroyed such a plan. As a result, the temple survived, and construction on a new project was resumed only in 1963. The Rybinsk bridge is interesting because it is the first bridge in Russia, which is made of monolithic, and not prefabricated concrete. Externally, the design causes a feeling of airiness and lightness, but this is quite deceptive. In fact, the bridge is more than reliable and durable.

For many centuries, this picturesque and amazing city did not lose its importance. The most striking proof of this are the sights of the city of Rybinsk. This is a city where it is really impossible to get bored! Visit it! And you will certainly be convinced of this.
