In August 1917, an uprising broke out in the Vietnamese soldiers in the colonial troops in the province of Thay-nguen. In 1901, the first public organization, the Buddhist Youth Association (BAM), was established. Secular political organizations began to emerge during the First World War. Having joined the BAM, they gave a more radical character to the activities of this organization. In 1917, the BAM leadership took a course toward anti-imperialist actions.

In Siam, under the influence of events in China and Vietnam, a bourgeois anti-imperialist movement arose among the intelligentsia and the army. The leading trend in ideology remained monarchical nationalism, the conductor of which was King Rama IV Vachirovud (1910-1925). In his reign Siam achieved the abolition of the rights of extraterritoriality for French and English subjects, and then consular jurisdiction and for subjects of other powers.

In the conditions of the new political and economic factors caused by the First World War, and under the influence of the ideas of the Great October Socialist Revolution, which greatly influenced the national liberation movements, serious changes occurred in South-East Asia. The growing importance of the oil industry (Indonesia, Burma, Brunei). Burma and the Philippines were suppliers of colored ores, manganese and gold, Vietnam and Indonesia - of coal. The export orientation of rice farming in Burma, Vietnam and Thailand was stimulated; Indonesia and the Philippines have become the largest suppliers of cane sugar and copra.

Under the influence of colonialism in Southeast Asia, there was a significant acceleration of capitalist development. The largest and most modern sector in the colonies remained foreign. The activity of capital of Chinese and Indian origin (the latter in Burma) has increased. A noticeable impetus received capitalist development in the national sector.
