Planting potatoes in the Urals: how right?

Potatoes are the second bread, this is how the people speak about this vegetable. There are many recipes for dishes from potatoes: mashed potatoes, french fries, potatoes in uniforms, pies with potatoes ... All of these dishes are among the favorites of Russians. How to grow potatoes? In the warm conditions of the south, it grows very well. And how, for example, in the Urals?

In different regions potato planting is carried out at different times. In the Urals, it is planted in May. At this time, the temperature of the earth is already above four degrees, which is quite enough for landing. It is better to plant the seeds of potatoes when they are already heated in the sun and sprouted. When planting, do not always use a shovel. In the Urals it is customary to use a chopper, since the planting of potatoes does not require great depth.

Using the chopper, make shallow, 5-6 cm furrows. The gaps between them can be made about one meter. Do furrows from the north to the south, so that there is no problem with the light for growing potatoes.

When the time comes for planting potatoes, it is necessary to treat the tubers with wood ash to protect them from pests. Now you can put them in the furrows per one meter about four tubers. Next, you need to fill them with humus or manure, and then - with earth. Using a chopper to smooth the surface of the site is easy enough. Now the former furrows have turned into crests, and with further hummocking they will only increase. It is recommended to grow potatoes approximately three times during the summer season. So, for the harvesting of the potatoes, the comb can be up to thirty centimeters high.

Few people use desiccation of potato tops. Climatic features of the Urals do not allow the tops to die by the time of harvesting. For more rapid ripening of the foliage, it is sprayed with a special solution. The ripe tops wilt and ceases to draw moisture from the tubers. This contributes to their growth and maximum preservation of nutrients.

In addition to the usual, the planting of potatoes in the Urals is carried out under hay. The technology of such planting differs from the usual only in that planted potatoes are covered with hay or straw. It is not difficult to do this, the main thing is to take care of the covering material from the fall in advance. Too thick to cover it is not necessary, 15-20 cm is enough. Otherwise, it can prevent heating of the earth and shoot shoots. Hay can be put in the process of growing, overlap sprouts around when they reach ten centimeters in height. Planting potatoes under the hay has many advantages. This is the absence of weeds (they grow too poorly through hay) and the uselessness of watering, because the land under the hay practically does not dry out. Many fans of this type of planting argue that the Colorado potato beetle in such beds is much smaller.

So, planting potatoes in the Urals is quite a simple matter, you just need to take into account the climatic features and guide them when caring for a growing crop. In addition, the Urals land is able to grow a large number of different varieties of potatoes. Local breeders number about a hundred, most of them were bred, just as the planting of potatoes in the Urals requires.
