To ensure the safety of athletes, organizers spent six times more than planned.

Surprisingly, the Olympics in Canada went "without a hitch," and not a single incident was recorded. And could it be otherwise, if the organizing committee attracted more than 20,000 law enforcement officers, although 6189 athletes collected the entire Olympics in Canada! Many participants in those competitions recall that the police were too zealous to perform their duties and not always correctly.

For the first time huge screens in the stadiums appeared in Canada

Technical progress has become the main feature of the Olympics: if in past games four years ago it was only gradually being introduced, then in Montreal it became one of the chips of the organizers of the games. For example, in the main arena of the Olympic Games, where athletics competitions were held, two huge screens were installed. They broadcast the most interesting competitive moments, you could even watch the slow repetitions, which at that time was simply unthinkable.

It's surprising that Moscow could become hostess of the Olympics not in 1980, but four years earlier. At one of the congresses of the World Olympic Committee elected the city, which will take in 1976 the main games of the four years. The applicants were three: Montreal, Moscow and Los Angeles. The main favorite was the capital of the USSR, the successes of Soviet athletes and the fact that the main country of the socialist bloc had not yet hosted such major competitions, spoke in favor of Moscow.

The first round of voting confirmed this. Moscow scored 28 votes, three were less than Montreal and only 17 votes were given for the American city. The two capitalist countries had to resort to the trick to get the Olympics.

The American city was shot in the second round, and all their votes went to Montreal instead of the US. Canada, the Olympics in which it was appointed in 1976, won. Since the countries from the socialist bloc dominated most sports, having proved their strength to the whole world, they were rightfully honored to host the next Olympiad. But that's another story ...
