Myth or reality, or Who are Amazons?

There is a beautiful story about warlike women who kept in fear the whole ancient world and battled on the spot not only with their beauty, but also with weapons. They are called Amazons. Is this story a myth or reality, and who are Amazons? The answer is in the deep past.

Who are the Amazons?

For the first time and once mention of the belligerent beauties of the ancient Greeks. Their patroness was the goddess Artemis. These ladies are credited with extensive possessions, beginning with the lands near the Pheromont River in Asia Minor and ending with the Syrian and Thracian lands. Tribes, the Amazons at that time stood out among the rest with their iron weapons and battle cavalry. But their most significant feature is that there was not a single man in their army. On the contrary, the women of this tribe did not respect the strong sex, they considered it to be pampered and frail. Men needed beautiful warriors only to continue the race. In the stories about who such amazons are, it is often the opinion that they took prisoners of men, with whom they later offspring. However, it is possible that the brave virgins for this purpose were married to a young man from neighboring tribes, and having achieved the desired, they were expelled from their community. Some sources indicate that the men were in the Amazon tribes, but did not participate in military operations, but only engaged in housekeeping. The right to become a mother was only among those Amazons who killed at least three enemies. If boys were born in their tribe, then according to the first version they were immediately killed, on the second - they were given to the fathers. In order to understand who Amazons are, you should know the meaning of their name. In literal translation, the Greek word amazes is "bezgrudaya." According to ancient legends, each wild Amazon, for greater convenience, when using a bow and other weapons, deprived itself of the right breast. Some historians believe that they called these women benighted because they were not feminine in the full sense of the word.

Amazons in Myths

For the first time these ladies are mentioned in one of the exploits of Hercules. Thus, according to the myths of Ancient Hellas, the valiant hero was commissioned to deliver the belt of Hippolytus, the Queen of the Amazons. In order to get this thing, Hercules had to kill all the warlike virgins. Which, however, did not stop them from appearing in the stories about Theseus. In accordance with this legend, this hero was quite friendly with Hercules and even with him participated in the campaign against the Amazons, from where he brought his wife - the very queen Hippolytus. Desperate women immediately rushed to fight for her mistress. But in the end, they themselves killed her: Hippolytus took upon herself the blow intended for her husband.

Myth or reality?

Tales of who Amazons are, do not explain the main thing - whether they really existed or were the fruit of the imagination of the ancient Greeks. Some believe that the story of them is just a fairy tale, as evidenced by their appearance in myths. Others believe that the Amazons are an unreasonable tribe that could exist on the territories of modern Turkey, Greece, Asia or even Russia. Until now, this issue is unresolved.
