Mossberg 500: reviews, photos, misfires on the frost

The American army of the twentieth century waged all its wars with active use of shotguns. A lot of historical books, records and documents contain information that testifies to the active use by the Americans in many military clashes and conflicts of shotguns.

The environmental conditions, the characteristic density of the Vietnamese jungle, in which it was necessary to fight the US military, who had to master the art of close combat, their changed requests, the rich combat experience of using shotguns, became the factors that led to the creation of a new, more advanced pump gun, known as Mossberg 500 ".

How weapons were created: history

The "Mossberg 500" gun is an alternative version of the Remington 870, actively used by the army and the police.

In 1960, it was decided to create a similar rifle Remington 870 - more affordable, suitable for hunting both waterfowl and bear.

On the shelves of weapons shops, a new pump-shot shotgun appeared, with the difference that materials were used to make it cheaper. However, this did not affect the quality of the weapon, the effectiveness of shooting and its accuracy. Conversely, the production of inexpensive raw materials made the "Mossberg 500" gun more affordable for different segments of the population. This allowed him to become a serious competitor to the illustrious Remington 870.

The presentation of the first copy took place on August 21, 1961. Victories at many weapons exhibitions, awards and flattering reviews of competent connoisseurs made the Mossberg 500 pump gun one of the most popular types of inexpensive pump shotguns.

Production

Production of weapons began in 1961. Since then, the Mossberg 500 shotgun has been manufactured on a conveyor belt by assembling it from standard spare parts. This method was called selective. In the event that the details reveal shortcomings, they are immediately sent to the shop for remelting.

The manufacturer of this weapon is the well-known company Mossberg & Sons, which was led by the emigrant from Sweden Oscar Frederick Mossberg. His company specializing in the manufacture of weapons, bypassed the Remington patent protection by replacing the shock-trigger mechanism, thanks to which appeared the visiting card of the shotgun shotgun Mossberg - the famous Mossberg fuse.

Steel is used for the production of trunks, gates and elements of impact and release mechanisms. The trunk box is made of aluminum alloys. To ensure its strength, the use of a metal having a large thickness is practiced.

Plastic is used in the manufacture of the base of shock-trigger mechanisms and for pistol grips. Also made of plastic produce butt and shotgun forearm, but mainly for butts preference is given to the tree.

Before assembling the "Mossberg 500" shotgun, the surfaces of all its visible elements undergo a thorough processing, consisting of blue bluing, nickel plating and parrination.

Fuse

The presence of a fuse in the design of the pumping shotgun "Mossberg 500" is considered to be its characteristic individual feature. The fuse on the top of the receiver is located, which makes it convenient to switch it during shooting from both the right and left shoulders. The fuse is represented by a button located on the trigger, which is convenient for controlling with the help of the index finger.

The convenience of using a fuse is possible only if it is located on the stock shots of a shotgun. On the pistol grip the process of using the fuse is much more difficult. Therefore, for the pump guns of the firm "Mossberg" specially produced handles polupistoletnogo sample, which are very similar to the handle cuts.

Technical indicators

"Mossberg 500" refers to the type of shotguns. According to the principle of operation it is a pump gun. Weight without cartridges is 3.3 kg. The length of the barrel varies from 350 to 700 mm. Sighting range is 40 m. For shotgun ammunition cartridges are used 12 x 70, 12 x 76, 12 x 89, 20 x 70, 20 x 76, 410 x 70, 410 x 76.

Operating principle

The Mossberg 500 is a typical pump gun. The barrel has four holes, which are intended for fasteners under the sights - dioptric and optical. The shotgun contains a barrel-shaped tube-shaped magazine, holding between 5 and 9 cartridges. Recharging is carried out by moving the forehead backwards - forward.

Since a large number of powder gases accumulate in the shotgun's trunk during the execution of the shot, with the present small weight of the weapon this greatly enhances the kickback and throwing of the barrel upwards. Therefore, in the trunks of shotguns "Mossberg 500" there are rows of small holes that perform a compensating function. When shot, a part of the powder gases exits through these openings, creating a reverse force, lowering the barrel of the weapon downwards. The presence of compensators makes it possible to carry out a quick aiming for the next shots, saves time, which is especially important during hunting.

Design

Externally, "Mossberg 500", the photo of which is presented below, has the appearance of a light polished weapon, as if processed by the method of chromium plating and nickel plating. But this is not so. All metal parts that come in contact with air are treated with a special substance that provides corrosion protection. The weapon has an anti-glare effect. The covered visible parts have a matte shade, do not shine.

Internal organization

The gun "Mossberg 500", unlike the other pump-type ones, has several features. In this model, there is a peculiarity of the closure of the barrel channel, which is performed by fastening with the breech block of the movable gate with an inertial spring hammer and two ejectors. They are responsible for the extraction of shot cartridges, produced when moving the forehead back.

The movable forearm is connected to the bolt by means of two rods. They lift the swinging shutter larva and open the barrel channel. When cocking the trigger due to the displacement of the bolt in the rear position, the cartridges are released from the stop. During the displacement of the foremost forward, they are taken out of the magazine.

The cutter controls that only one cartridge is output and through the feeder tray it becomes on the sending line. After the bolt reaches the stop in the breech block trunk, its grip occurs with the barrel.

The plastic case contains a shock-trigger mechanism, which is removed when disassembling the weapon. The presence of a manual trigger hook prevents shots when the trigger is not pressed. This fuse has the form of a lever that is easily controlled by a finger. To turn off the fuse, just move it forward. At the same time, a red dot should appear on the body, allowing you to monitor the state of the shotgun.

Separation of the shutter from the breech part is also carried out with the help of a special wire loop passing through the receiver through its side and bottom openings. The option with a safety loop is designed for marching conditions.

Under the action of the feeder and the helical spring, the cartridges located under the barrel are fed through its breech cut. One of the components of the store - stop - prevents the loss of cartridges.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to recharge the shotgun without making shots. Most often this happens when you need to replace the cartridges - shot on the card or vice versa. For this purpose in the mechanism of a shotgun there is an uncoupler - a special button located on the left side, behind the trigger guard. Pressing and holding the button of the disconnector, you can insert the cartridge through the bottom window. After having shaken the shutter after this, it is possible to achieve that the unloaded cartridge will be removed, and the new one will replace it. Only after that the button of the uncoupler can be released.

Advantages of the Mossberg 500 model

  • The use of shotgun materials in light materials had a good effect on the price of weapons, on its availability.
  • Aluminum and plastic used in the manufacture of trunks, greatly facilitated the weight of weapons.
  • The high reliability of the shotgun is ensured by the difference in the hardening of the chamber and barrel, which in the sample Mossberg 500 for the purpose of reduction in price are separate details.
  • The presence of gaps between the individual parts of the shotgun does not affect its reliability even in the case of its severe contamination.

disadvantages

  • The lever of the fuse, which is in the back of the receiver, generates a characteristic clang during recharging. The shotgun rattles violently with any movement. Because of these properties, the "Mossberg 500" is also called a "rattle".
  • The light weight of a pump shotgun with a shot gives a big return.
  • The disadvantages are also the difficulties of tuning.

Use on hunting

The hunting rifle "Mossberg 500" is considered an ideal option for hunting, especially for beginners. For a more reliable operation of the recharging mechanism in the case of severe contamination, a rather large backlash play with steel rods leading to the bolt and a bolt frame is specially made. Also owners are pleased with the possibility of easy cleaning and disassembly of the gun. The simple construction of a shotgun, the reliability and reliability of the mechanism, and also the unpretentiousness of the weapon make it indispensable in extreme conditions - under the influence of climatic factors, humidity, pollution, combat operations.

The most unpleasant moments encountered by many hunters using various samples of shotguns are depreciation and misfires, the nature of which is different, ranging from defects in capsules of cartridges to temperature drops. Amortization is largely characteristic of the hunting weapon "Mossberg 500".

The reviews of the owners of these shotguns show that, despite the ideal mechanism for hunting, it does not exclude the freezing of weapons lubricants. This is an unpleasant moment. In the shotguns "Mossberg 500" misfires in the frost occur in cases where there is water inside the mechanism. It can get there due to getting wet from the rain or snow, and also if during the hunt the arms were thrown into the snow.

Who is used?

The range of application of the pumping shotgun "Mossberg 500" is very wide. Previously, it was intended exclusively for hunters and weapons of police units. But the further reduction in the price of a shotgun made it affordable for the broad masses of the population.

Thanks to the high lethal force "Mossberg 500" has become indispensable in the conduct of mafia shootouts. At this time, the weapons of this brand are constantly being improved. It is used by the armed forces of the armies of the United States, Thailand.
