Medal "For the liberation of Crimea and Sevastopol"

The return of Crimea without exaggeration is the most important event in the modern history of our country. Fortunately, it happened without a single shot and casualties, and, whatever the descendants of those whom Pushkin called "slanderers of Russia", at the will of the Crimeans themselves, said. However, one can not fail to understand that it would not have taken place had it not been for the efforts of people, a considerable part of which was quite far from the Crimea.

In March 2014, the press reported that a medal "For the Liberation of the Crimea" was created, its first batch was already manufactured at the factory of the company "Russian Ribbon" and the first awards were held.

Medal for the Crimean War

For the annexation of the Crimea to Russia in 1783, many military and civil dignitaries were generously awarded Catherine II orders, valuable gifts, titles and estates. However, the medal, in the title of which the word "Crimea" figured, first appeared during the war of the Russian Empire with the forces of the coalition, consisting of the British and Ottoman empires, France and the Sardinian Kingdom (1853-1856). It was created in honor of the completion of hostilities, as well as in commemoration of the coronation of Emperor Alexander II.

A total of 170,000 such medals were produced, and the presentation for the award ceremony was completed in late August 1859. It is also known that there were several variants of this award: on Georgievskaya, Vladimirskaya and on Andreevskaya tapes, which were made of dark or light bronze.

Medal of the Second World War "For the defense of Sevastopol"

The next "Crimean" award appeared in 1942 year. She became a Soviet medal "For the Defense of Sevastopol," which was awarded to all those who defended the main Crimean marine citadel from the middle of the autumn of 1941 to the beginning of July 1942. In total, for the history of the medal, it was awarded to 52,540 military personnel and civilians.

On the obverse of the medal there are bulging breast portraits of the Red Army and Red-Fleet figures looking to the left, and under them the guns and anchors. A convex inscription "FOR THE DEFENSE OF SEVASTOPOL" is marked along the circle of a circle with a diameter of 2.2 cm. As for the reverse, it exactly resembles the reverse side of the remaining Soviet awards of the WWII period.

The first medal "For the liberation of Crimea"

Back in 1944, the Soviet government was considering the issue of creating a special award. It was intended for those servicemen and civilians who participated in the liberation of the Crimean peninsula from the German fascist invaders. However, the sketch of the award remained on paper, since the corresponding provision was not adopted to establish such a medal. The liberation of the Crimea from the fascist invaders for this reason can not be regarded as a less significant event than other WWII battles.

Moreover, as a result of this operation, the USSR regained full control over the Black Sea, which put under attack such important allies of fascist Germany as Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria.
