Mangals (breed of pigs): description. Breeding pigs of the brazier

Mangals - a breed of pigs, which refers to the elite. Due to the unpretentiousness of these animals and the high quality of meat, which is the ideal raw material for making various delicacies, they are highly valued all over the world.

Historical reference

It is believed that mangals are a breed of pigs, bred in the early 19th century in Hungary by crossing traditional Hungarian bakony with Serbian Samadia and wild boar. The peak of its popularity came in the post-war years, when demand for salami and bacon increased in Europe. However, in the late 1970s, when products containing many animal fats were found to be harmful to health, the number of mangals in many countries of the Old World was sharply reduced, and these mumps were on the verge of extinction. The situation was saved by the company "Hamones Segovia", which tracked down 90 females of this breed for reproduction. She managed to achieve great success in the revival of mangal. In particular, today the "Hamones Segovia" is the only company that owns all three kinds of such pigs and has large herds of these animals.

Description

Mangals are a breed of pigs, whose adult individuals have medium-sized ears and a dense hair coat resembling a scabbard, and their mass can reach three hundred kilograms, depending on the conditions of detention. They do not have a particularly strong skeleton structure, thin legs on small hoofs and medium chest circumference. The presence of wool allows pigs of the grill breed to easily tolerate frosts and not suffer from insect bites. In color these animals are divided into 3 groups: red, white and mixed. There is also a black variety of mangal pigs, whose representatives are extremely rare and are on the verge of extinction.

Ration

Obviously, the best option for breeding and maintenance, in terms of unpretentiousness, are herbivorous pigs. The barbecue breed quickly gaining weight without the use of any additives. At the same time, they eat little, and in winter, 70% of their diet is hay, corn cobs and stems, root crops, beets, pumpkin, and 30% - cereal waste, chestnuts and acorns. As for feeding the braziers in the summer, they mostly use young twigs of trees and shrubs, fruit tree falcons, zucchini, pumpkin, beetroot and duckweed. In addition, it is recommended to feed them (about 20% of the diet) with crushed foods such as flour, bran and other waste, and a month before the slaughter of the pigs you must feed grain - 300 g per day per animal.

The livestock keepers note that these guinea pigs take care of the fodder extremely carefully and when they keep in the room they clean up all the grains, which are advantageously different from many other kinds of domestic animals.

Pigs mangala: breeding and maintenance

The animals of this small breed become sexually mature at about the age of five to seven months. Their pregnancy lasts about 4 months, and when breeding offspring (since the second farrowing the average litter is from 12 to 16 pigs), sows do not need human help.

From the 5th day after the birth of the young, it must be fed with liquid mallet and barley, and also give them mineral fodder, for example, chalk, bone meal and red clay. The need for such a diet is eliminated when the pigs are 3 weeks old, since the grown piglets are able to feed on a par with adults, gnawing pumpkin, apples, beets and eating grass. Interestingly, up to the age of 1 month the piglets are striped, and after their banding gradually disappears. Around the same time, veterinarians recommend weaning the babies, and on the fifth day after weaning the sow is mated again.

Even for newborn mangalas, frosty weather (but not fierce cold) is not dangerous, and they can be kept in easily knocked down wooden sheds, where the piglets will be protected from wind and rain. In this case, it is necessary to fill in the hay, from which the sow will make a nest, where the newly born offspring will lay down.

Features of care

Breeding pigs of the mangal breed is also beneficial because they do not require any vaccinations, as these animals possess exceptionally strong immunity, inherited from an ancestor - a wild West European wild boar. In order that the wild boars quickly gain weight, it is recommended that they be neutered. In this case, all their energy goes to increase the weight. At the same time, the meat is exceptionally tasty, as it is permeated with veins of fat. When heat treated, the mulberry melts, making the dishes more juicy.

Where it is better to buy

As already mentioned, mangal is a breed of pigs, which is very profitable to grow, especially in Russia, since it is frost-resistant animals, and they can be released to pastures even at low temperatures (-1 ...- 2 degrees Celsius). Unfortunately, in our country at the moment it is rather difficult to purchase them. The fact is that pigs, really belonging to the breed of brazier, are rare, and some unscrupulous sellers for the purpose of quick profit under their guise can offer piglets of quite different species. For example, most often these scammers try to sell Vietnamese or Korean guinea pigs instead of mangalks. These animals are also unpretentious and eat quite a bit, but adults do not look like "Hungarians" at all. In addition, the vast majority of individuals barely reach a mass of 80 kg.

To avoid cheating, you need to contact the farm where the breed is actually bred, and ask to show the parents of the pigs intended for sale. In this case, firstly, the risk will be minimal, and secondly, if the crumbs do not grow the way you promised, then you will know who to file a claim.

Price for young

Prior to the recent notorious events piglets of mangal breeds were brought from Ukraine, where they have been breeding for more than 150 years. In this case, you had to spend money on the road and prepare the documents necessary for the movement of livestock across the border. Now, most likely, we will have to look for other ways of delivery of these animals to the territory of the Russian Federation.

How many are the pigs of the grill? The price fluctuates around 10-15 thousand rubles for 1 individual. Expensive, of course. But you can be 100% sure that such an investment will bring a significant profit in just a few months.

A few tips from experienced breeders

If you keep the braziers indoors in the autumn and do not send them to the paddock, they will not grow hair, and outwardly these animals will resemble ordinary pigs. In addition, the pasture for pigs should be fenced to protect them from dogs and predators, and you should make sure that it does not grow such poisonous plants as St. John's wort, bleached common, buttercup, caustic and others. If piglets are weaned from the sow at a month's age, two farrowing can be obtained in one year.

It is recommended to eat mangal only after they reach a weight of 100 kg, since otherwise it is possible to obtain non-viable offspring. Although pigs of this breed are able to cope with farrowing themselves, owners are advised to be present at this process, in case the babies or the sow need help.

Now you know how elite pigs of the brazier look, how many pigs on the average are and what are the characteristics of their breeding.
