The colossal difference between appearance and specialization of dogs confirms the fact that terriers have not disappeared with time, but, on the contrary, were successfully bred. The plasticity of the rock helped develop and consolidate the selected useful qualities.

History

The dogs of this breed group are known for more than two thousand years. The name itself comes from the Latin terra - "earth". Free translation from French is a "normal dog". The vast majority of modern breeds were created in the British Isles. Initially, they called the dogs terriers, capable of coping with the nordic game due to their strength, courage and mighty jaws. Hunting, they perfectly combined with the functions of house guards.

In the middle of the eighteenth century two types of dogs are mentioned in Daniel's almanac. Terrier smooth - haired - with a magnificent composition, a lively and cheerful disposition, a reddish-brown or black color with red legs. The second type, coarse-wool, was described as follows: the paws are short, the back is long, strong, black or yellowish in color, sometimes with white marks.

Specialization

The main direction is hunting for normal animals and fighting rodents. The hunting abilities of the terriers were used not only for hunting foxes and badgers. Courageous dogs could join in single combat with otters and other small animals and even drove wild boars.

On the ships in the holds, huge barns, slaughterhouses, stables and cattle yards there were always rats. They were the cause of terrible epidemics. To combat them used terriers. Werewolf, with a perfect nose, they easily coped with rodents.

Excellent natural instincts and excellent working qualities have helped these dogs to conquer all continents. In America, selected individuals with a heightened sense of smell to search for and capture slaves. Later, a large breed of Airedale terriers was brought out, and they were successfully used as service dogs.

Terriers breed smooth-haired have a softer to the touch of hair. And in one breed there can be both directions. In addition, inside they can be subdivided into specially bred dogs for exhibitions or for hunting, with pronounced working qualities. Long-haired dogs are also bred, they have long and soft wool.

Decorative terriers do not require special skills of maintenance or care. Sports, service, fighting or hunting representatives of this breed need appropriate physical exertion. Without them, dogs become uncontrollable and begin to give their owners a lot of trouble.

The number and intensity of physical activities directly depend on the specialization of the terrier. Sports and hunting dogs need long walks and a serious load. The tote terriers are twenty minutes three times a day to fully satisfy their need for movement.

Feeding

Any terrier smooth-haired or wire-haired requires a balanced diet. Some owners prefer to feed their pets with natural fodder, others - dry. Both options are acceptable for terriers.

It should be borne in mind that dry food provides the dog with all necessary vitamins, micro- and macro elements. To natural foods, supplements are required that help to properly balance the nutrition of the animal. If desired, after purchasing a puppy, it can easily be transferred to one or another type of feeding. The main thing is to do it gradually.

Lump of energy

Millionth army of fans these dogs received after the release of the movie "Mask" in 1994. The very same breed was bred in England in the 18th century. "Parent" is considered to be Reverend Jack Russell, who gave the breeding of dogs for more than 65 years. He sought to get a compact, hardy and balanced hunter, with strong jaws and a sonorous voice.

Brief characteristics of dogs:

  • Very playful and active;
  • Are wary of strangers;
  • Quietly get on with the children;

  • The average difficulty of training.

They require great physical exertion. Weight within 6 kg, height up to 30 cm, bitches - up to 26 cm, life expectancy up to 16 years.

Modern breed has several divisions on different grounds:

  • Wool type:

- Jack Russell, a smooth-haired terrier , the best variant of the hunting norn of a working dog. Wool is not an obstacle to lasagna on narrow holes. The dense undercoat perfectly protects from adverse weather conditions.

- Long-haired (coarse-wool) looks shaggy. This is due to the fact that the hair loosely adheres to the body of the animal.

- Intermediate (Broken - Broken). Such dogs do not grow a beard and eyebrows, the hair is tightly attached to the body and does not stick out in all directions.

  • Color:

- white suit with a tan;

- white suit with black spots.

The smooth-haired terrier on the hunt should be well marked. That is why the white suit was fixed in litters with selective breeding. A white dog on a hunt is difficult to confuse with a predatory beast, which means that there is less chance of accidentally killing it.

Dogs of this breed are acquired not only for hunting. They become great pets or partners in dog sports frisbee or freestyle.
