Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant: information and products

Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant is one of the ten most modern non-ferrous metallurgy enterprises in the world. The plant is a city-forming company, where the majority of the population of Kyshtym is working.

From the Demidov Empire

Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant, like many industrial centers in the Urals, was founded in 1757 by Nikita Demidov. The enterprise was engaged in casting iron under the famous trademark "Old Sable", whose products were known in Europe and very much appreciated. Kyshtym factory was one of the fifty industrial enterprises of the Demidov dynasty, which unfolded in the Urals with all the breadth and grasp of the Russian pioneer.

In England, the metal of the Demidov factories covered the roof, and in Russia the floor of the Trinity Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was laid with iron plates. The metal was of such a high quality that it was bought in England and Sweden, where the manufacture of iron was a national pride.

The smelting business in Kyshtym lasted 150 years. In 1873 the plant was assigned to the best manufactures in Russia and the Urals, recognition of achievements occurred at the World Exhibition in Vienna.

The Edgar Hoover Footprint

In 1809, the plant was bought by the gold miner Lev Rastorguev, after his death he was inherited by the receivers. According to the concession, in 1907, the iron-making factory became the property of the English company Urquhart. To the case of buying up the shares of the plant, the future president of the United States, Edgar Hoover, who worked for a while at the plant as an engineer, also put his hand.

Hoover created a joint stock company of Kyshtymsky mining plants, which bought shares from the heirs of Rastorguev. In the museum of KMEZ you can see a remarkable entry in the old account book about how many shares of the Ural plant belonged to Hoover.

For economic reasons, the ironmaking business in 1908 was reoriented to a more profitable and demanded business - copper refining. The choice was not accidental, the era of electricity came and the need for products from copper increased.

After the revolution

After 1917, all private companies were nationalized. Production for the national economy Kyshtym copper-electrolytic plant began to produce since 1920. In the course went the remaining ingots from the tsarist times, from which they began to make rolled copper wire.

The expansion of the assortment of manufactured products occurred in the period of 20-30 years. For the first time in the history of Russia, in 1928, the plant received selenium for industrial purposes and set up its mass production. The beginning of the thirties was marked by the invention of the method of obtaining tellurium and the introduction of technology in the enterprise. When glass was made for ruby stars of the Moscow Kremlin, selenium from the Kyshtymsky plant was used in the alloy.

In 1937, the enterprise set up a mass production of copper sulfate. During the Great Patriotic War, the output was oriented to the needs of the front. During the post-war reconstruction, the plant was significantly expanded, which allowed to master the production of copper foil by electrolytic method in 1961, which was also done for the first time in the USSR.

Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant survived a second birth in the eighties, when the whole production and auxiliary funds were radically reconstructed. The process was completed in the period of perestroika, in 1995. In addition to transformations in the industrial sector, the plant managed to build a housing estate for employees, to increase staff.

By the level of used equipment and technological processes, the enterprise became one of the ten leading companies, which is marked by certificates in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001: 2008. The company is independent in making decisions on many issues, Kyshtym copper electrolytic plant, INN 7413000630.

Modernity

In 2003, the Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant was acquired by the Russian Copper Company. In 2005, another reconstruction was carried out at the enterprise, the aim of which was the second anode furnace, and an eletrolysis shop was built and launched under the project of the Finnish company Outotec. The measures taken allowed to increase the annual output of copper cathodes up to 120 thousand tons (starting capacity was 80 thousand tons).

Two years later ZAO Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant increased the output of wire rod by the method of continuous casting. For this purpose, new American equipment SCR 2000 was installed. This step allowed to increase the production of products demanded on the world and domestic market up to 100 thousand tons within a year, strengthening the position of KMEZ. Today about 15% of all wire rod in Russia is produced by this enterprise.

Company structure

Kyshtym copper electrolyte plant is located in the Chelyabinsk region. The number of employees is 3,400. The production structure of the enterprise includes:

  • Copper smelting shop, which produces 112 thousand tons of finished products per year (copper anodes).
  • The copper electrolysis shop, consisting of three departments - copper electrolysis (99.9% purity), copper sulfate production, refining department (gold, silver bullion, platinum and palladium in powder).
  • The shop of copper wire rod (diameter 8 mm, three classes of quality - A, B, C).
